A backstory about Sadie and Axton’s relationship on Tor, The Heir and the Human has everything you could want in a book – action, romance and suspense, with some inevitable anguish thrown in as well. The secret plan to evade Griselda’s wishes creates powerful hooks and tension, drawing the reader in, and the supreme flow of the writing completes the novella to make it exceptionally gripping.
The small range of characters is by no means a disadvantage, as we get to discover more about those who feature, helping us to understand them much better in the main books. The reader pleasantly sees more of Izzy, also meeting Blade, in addition to discovering more about Axton and Sadie, whilst detestable characters like Rhys show up as well. With greater knowledge of the characters, having watched them progress through the story, empathising with them and their emotions is much easier. I find that this appreciably enhances a book.
The plotline is mainly based on Axton and Blade’s plan, which remains unknown to the reader until close to ending. This provides a constant supply of exciting tension and suspense during the novella, with plenty of lively action and drama to develop other side plots. The pace is perfectly balanced, steadily moderate before going at full speed and ending on a high. The storyline also grows of its own accord, not forced in a specific direction, so overall it was really difficult to put this novella down.
This Saven story is chock-full of detailed descriptions of Tor, and the exquisite nature reserve – which I’m sure everyone wishes they could visit – as well as everything and everyone else. Visions of the world are so deep that fiction and reality become one.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

I was so excited when I saw we would get a piece of Ax and Sadie their backstory and wow this novella sure didn’t disappoint. It’s an optional read, but I think it really adds something to this world and story Siobhan created. You can skip it and still follow the story, but I feel like this novella adds another layer and some depth and background to some characters.

We learn more about Ax and Sadie their past and their time on Tor in this novella. W see through Ax his eyes and really get how much Sadie means to him. It’s quite the emotions read and it’s so bittersweet! It was such a great read and at the same time it made me also very sad. If you read the first 3 books in this series you know what will happen and reading this novella knowing that is hard. I just felt so sorry for these characters, knowing what they will have to go through.

The Heir and the Human gives us a view into Ax his mind and until now I don’t think I ever fully understood him. I liked Ax form the beginning and his love for Sadie was obvious, but here you really get to see the extend of his love. How much he is willing to do for, how much he is willing to risk, how much he is willing to give up, how desperate he is. And it’s just awesome to get and understand his character better and if only for that this is a novella worth reading. I also think his behavior in book 3 makes more sense after reading this novella.

But it offers so much more. This novella shows us an important part of the backstory of some characters. And while we get some hints and bits and pieces in the books, I think this novella did a great job of having us be there and seeing things play out.

Are you a (not so) secret Sadie/Axton shipper like I am? It feels naughty, doesn't it? Like you're not supposed to like him more than Logan. Like you're cheating on him. BUT Axton is just mesmerizing and your heart bleeds for him (except for when he's acting like a big jerk). This is the novel for you, Saxtons.
Opening up and showing the readers Sadie's Tor life and how she and Axton fell in love, The Heir and the Human is everything I hoped for - and more! It doesn't just reveal the depths of Sadie and Axton, but of the whole life Sadie had with the Tor. The friendships, the tension, the training, and at times the insanity - everything is revealed here and, if it doesn't make you ache just a little bit for every friend she ever had but didn't remember, I'm not sure what to do with you. I can't help but think back to my own life. What if the boyfriend I was crazy about went away one day, came back soon after, but didn't remember me? What if my best friend suddenly had no idea of our private jokes, our nights comforting each other through heart ache, or our favorite ice cream flavor because it turns your tongue blue?
Throughout the series, it has been difficult to remember that to the Tor, Sadie was only gone for a short time instead of years. For them, it is all fresh and to her, it is nothing.
Well-written? YES! Concise but full; descriptive but not bogged down; staying true to what we know of Sadie's voice.
I know it's not "required", but I highly suggest reading this book. If you've checked out Siobhan Davis at Goodreads lately, you can see that the series already has 4 more books (including novellas) planned. You may also hear me giggling with anticipation to see what the future holds for my beloved Saxton. I'll constantly be holding out hope! (Sorry, Logan.)
