A unique insight into daily life during the WW2 Blitz. A prime strategic target for bombing due to its proximity to the London Docks, the Isle Of Dogs and its remaining residents (most were evacuated) suffered some of the worst damage in the country. Bill Regan, an avid reader of Samuel Pepys' diaries, faithfully documents his own family and community's courage, anxieties and tragedies as both an 'Islander' and as a volunteer with the local Heavy Rescue Squad. His diaries, which have long been used as a source for documentaries and books, are reproduced here for the first time as a work in their own right, thanks to the efforts of his historian daughter Ann. I read this excellent book from cover to cover and hardly put it down. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the history of the East End or London during wartime.
