One of the most powerful crime dramas of all time is hotter than ever! This all-new 2-Disc Director's Definitive Edition of HEAT features a pristine restoration personally supervised by Michael Mann, plus hours of revealing extras, including in-depth Q&As with the director as he reflects on the film two decades after its initial release. Academy Award Winners Al Pacino* and Robert De Niro** square off in this ground-breaking cat-and-mouse thriller written and directed by Michael Mann. The personal lives of a brilliant thief (De Niro) and an obsessive L.A. cop (Pacino) intertwine-and quickly unravel-as the criminal plans his final heist. Co-starring Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore and Ashley Judd, HEAT sizzles with hard-hitting action and gripping suspense.
Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in Heat, an intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The two great actors had played father and son in the separate time periods of The Godfather, Part II, but this was the first film in which the pair appeared together, and although their only scene together is brief, it's the riveting fulcrum of this high-tech cops-and-robbers scenario. De Niro plays a master thief with highly skilled partners (Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore) whose latest heist draws the attention of Pacino, playing a seasoned Los Angeles detective whose investigation reveals that cop and criminal lead similar lives. Both are so devoted to their professions that their personal lives are a disaster. Pacino's with a wife (Diane Venora) who cheats to avoid the reality of their desolate marriage; De Niro pays the price for a life with no outside connections; and Kilmer's wife (Ashley Judd) has all but given up hope that her husband will quit his criminal career. These are men obsessed, and as De Niro and Pacino know, they'll both do whatever's necessary to bring the other down.
Mann's brilliant screenplay explores these personal obsessions and sacrifices with absorbing insight, and the tension mounts with some of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed--most notably a daylight siege that turns downtown Los Angeles into a virtual war zone of automatic gunfire. At nearly three hours, Heat qualifies as a kind of intimate epic, certain to leave some viewers impatiently waiting for more action, but it's all part of Mann's compelling strategy. Heat is a true rarity: a crime thriller with equal measures of intense excitement and dramatic depth, giving De Niro and Pacino a prime showcase for their finely matched talents. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the DVD edition.See all Product description

Other classics that are a must watch:Leon [DVD] ,Ronin [DVD] ,Casino [DVD] ,Donnie Brasco (1997) [DVD].
The best of the 3 being Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese's classic starring Ray Liotta; And his 2 favorites, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. This story is fantastic and the characters are hilarious, and the time shift makes the film EVEN better. 10/10. 5*
The next best is Heat. Robert De Niro of course is in it, but it acting along side the other great gangster actor- Al Pacino, in a re-unition from 'The Godfather (part 2)'. This cop story about Al Pacino is brilliant, directed by the great Michael Mann, the story tells you about Al's character's his life, his trouble with his wife and his 'Do or Die' attempt to get the evasive bank robber, Rob De Niro. fantastic film. 9/10. 5*
The Deer Hunter is a classic Robert De Niro film, probably his most 'classic', but by far not his best. The worst of the 3, but still brilliant, this film tells you about the Vietnam War, and how his friend (THE FANTASTIC, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN)becomes obsessed with Russian Roulette. A bit strange, and half the story is missing out, 7 or 8/10. 4*
In this movie with de Niro, we again see the cop that will stop at nothing to get his prey. "I'm gonna bring you down," [paraphrase] he says to de Niro in their own cinematic scence to date (which only lasts a few minutes).
One of the best movies of the police genre I've ever seen. Great screenplay, great supporting actors like Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd. And the 2 disc special edition is definitely worth it for the interviews with the stars and staff.
