Outstanding second part of this trilogy. Unfortunately, I am reading the books in reverse order as I hadn't realised at my first purchase that this was the second part of a trilogy. This is such a true and factual account of the life and times of all classes both at the front in war but also on the home front. John Masters, from his military background, has such a feel for the life and times during the Great War that I have no hesitation in recommending this outstanding trilogy, of which this is part 2.

The loss of Eden trilogy are all immensely powerful with a wide sweep of characters and narrative. John Masters is one of the great storytellers of the 20th Century now sadly overlooked. Highly recommended.

This is a master piece .. The trilogy is one of the great literary English works of the 20th century. It is big , broad ,comic, beautiful at times heroic , sad , inspiring, very human . Masters characters are beautifully drawn . The first 80 to 100 pages are a little difficult but after that it takes off . A master piece , it should be up there eith War and peace a trilogy of a genius .

Masters's Loss of Eden trilogy deals with the effects of the Great War on British Society. The middle volume Heart of War covers the period when the initial enthusiasm wears off and before there are even false dawns to encourage the populace. Some lessons for us now with our ongoing wars - each of longer duration than either of the World Wars...
