This was a first time read for me by shari and I was totally not expecting such a truly heartfelt book. I will admit I cried like a baby reading this it wasn't the characters that threw me it was the actual storyline that got me and I truly felt part of every page as if I was going through it with the characters and that is what to me is a damm good book in my eyes I sat and read from the blurb to the very last page and still wanted more 5 stars so does not do this book the justice it so deserves as it's worth so much more than that 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 its cannot wait to read more of this authors work
This book touches on a very real and heartbreaking subject, and has you asking yourself what would you do in that situation. I think I cried throughout the whole book!
This was the first book that I have read from Shari and this has made me want to read her back catalogue.
I cannot recommend this book enough, if you enjoy a good emotional roller coaster of a read that will leave you believing in love, life and maybe even the afterlife!
Ryan creates a subtle catalyst for change when Hunter is introduced to his new neighbor Charlotte. This leads to something that takes Hunter out of his comfort zone and ensures things won't ever be the same. In this, Hunter's distress is palpable. I found myself suspicious of Charlotte from the get go. I couldn't pin it on anything specific, but I felt that she was holding back on something so between likely secrets and a feeling that she felt a little desperate. Hunter is further conflicted when he meets Ari, who adds a whole new level of complexity to Hunter's life. His conflict made me conflicted and I couldn't quite reconcile his path, what or who would be good for him. Ari seems so right and she also seemed so wrong. It was a bit perplexing.
The story is rich with multiple characters and a couple side story-lines. Olive, Hunters young daughter is at the center. She is wise beyond her 5 years and exactly what drives most of Hunter's life choices. Hunters brother AJ provides drama, his own and some for Hunter as well.
The story wasn't predictable even when it went where I thought it would. Part of me wanted something different. But in the end, it made sense; Hunter's recovery and the path he ended up on. My connection with Hunter was unexpected and for the most part I stayed lock step with his moods. I'm always in awe when an author can make me feel so much for characters that I feel like I have a stake in their future(s). 4 stars & recommendation!
IF YOU ONLY READ ONE HEART WRENCHING BOOK THIS YEAR PICK THIS BOOK!!!
I am not a fan of the Heart breaking, Ugly Cry book genre, in fact I only have ever read them by mistake... and Ms Ryan has now joined Ms Lesley Jones as being the second author to completely break my heart... But she gets a gold star for putting me slowly back together in one book, which Ms Jones had to do by writing another that I had to wait for... SO THANK YOU Ms RYAN for not making this poor heart wait to be fixed.
So be warned have tissues at the ready.
Oh and have the whole day dedicated to reading this as I am warning you I didn't put it down, yesterday. I started it on the Friday but remembered I had another book to finish first, and knew after chapter 1 that this book was going to need a day where I would not be seen so I waited until Sunday and spent the whole day engrossed, Good job we had Monday off For Anzac day since I finished at 2.30am with a blocked up nose and red puffy eyes ( and thankfully I can ugly cry quietly and didn't wake the hubby up!)
The blurb says it all really - to be honest the blurb makes me choke up! #EmotionalReader Oh and if you haven't already guessed, I take all the stories I read and make the review personal... I give you my uncensored feelings that the book invoked, so be warned this review is going to be very emotional.
Hunter - our main character, the story is told via his POV, and gosh I got so emotionally involved with this character so quickly, I am well aware of the tragedies that can happen at what is supposed to be the happiest moment in a couple's lives, and Ms Ryan really brings Hunter's pain to life with her words, as he is rocked to the core by the news that not only was he saying goodbye to his wife, to realise his Forever was only 25 years, when they had promised eternity together, he also had to get used to the knowledge that someone somewhere would be walking around with her heart... And having to bring up their precious daughter Olive alone, when they were supposed to be a family, to grow old and grey together...
Ellie - oh Ellie...we get to know Ellie posthumously as this book progresses, via memories from the characters, but I did relate to her, having known my husband since childhood. I put myself in her shoes, as I lay in bed reading, thinking... would I have been this brave, how would my husband have coped? Would he have been able to carry on? As I said, I am an emotional reader, I get emotionally involved with what the characters are going through. and this scenario was a frightening possibility when I was carrying my first child, But I was lucky, and I have had a long happy life with my husband and my 3 children are now grown.
The story picks up 5 years later, Hunter is still grieving, but he tries to be the best dad he can be, and with a new house and a fresh start he is trying hard to do that, but its not easy, he is lucky that Olive is such a bright and wise 5 year old - Olive, well I guess she was my favourite character really, an old soul I would say, wise beyond her age with the things that she says sometimes, I often wondered who was parenting whom in some scenes. Olive is the light in Hunter's life, his family try to be supportive, but Hunter ignores their pleas to try and move forward... how long is long enough to grieve? I think I would grieve forever... So I fully understand how Hunter was finding it hard to move on.
It's the first day of Kindy, and Hunter is dreading it, I remember it well, the moment they step into the school yard or bus and you are left waiting... for what seems like forever till the school bell rings and they all run out full of smiles and noise.
Hunter is dreading the stares, from the crowd of mums, but when he meets single mum Charlotte at the bus stop, she brings an unexpected solace to his aching heart, Charlotte listens, she helps him get through that first day, and when her daughter Lana becomes best friends with Olive, the two become friends...
Then there are...The Letters... Ms Ryan oh wow how you added that extra dimension in this book... I commented on the first one OMG I am sobbing, Ms Ryan has definitely written a letter to get the most jaded heart weeping in sorrow... and joy of what one woman's gift upon her death, created a chance for another to live on.
This story is more than just a second chance romance, its much much more... But you will have to read it to find out what I mean.
I will finish my review with some quotes that have touched my heart, that inspired me to be strong when I want to give up.
Life is not one straight highway; sometimes it's an offbeat path with no direction, no signs, no warnings, and often with no apparent reason. It is rarely traveled on because there is no conclusive outcome and no defined ending until a person arrives there.- Hunter, A Heart of Time by Shari J. Ryan
I will continue walking blindly around new corners and into unchartered territory, unknowing of what lies ahead. I will allow life to unfold around each bend of the road. - Hunter, A Heart of Time by Shari J. Ryan
- these 2 quotes really resonate with my soul, when life gets hard, I will read these and keep going.
