A box set comprising pretty much everything Joy Division ever recorded, including the entire contents of their three studio albums (Closer, Unknown Pleasures and Still) as well as a host of live and session tracks? If you haven't managed to collect their back catalogue of individual albums and other releases, hen this would seem to be the one to go for. The only track that's missing, I think, is their live rendition of Sister Ray (captured on "Still"). And for all that, it fits onto only four CD's. Compare that with Pink Floyd's 16 disc box set Discovery or The Rolling Stones 14 disc "Remastered". The material that Joy Division created and recorded is fleeting, heartbreakingly sparse, but all the more powerful for that.

What can you say about a band like Joy Division, a group that, burned so brightly but so briefly? There is more passion, fear, darkness, light and originality in the opening chords of any one track that they produced than you will find in any of the souless, tasteless, talentless pap that is excreted in the name of profit (sorry, "music") today. Transmission is frantic, Isolation is painful, Atmosphere wistful, She's Lost Control is outraged and Dead Souls never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Nearly every song Joy Division have recorded(with the exception of a couple of tracks from the warsaw demo - that's what keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating), even some obscure ones that you could only get downloading some mp3s, a very good choice of live material, including a whole cd of unreleased stuff. a nice booklet. all packed in a box of 4 cds. for 20 quids, honestly, you can't ask for more. Awesome!

I had picked up a few Joy Division recordings previously but opted for this extraordinary collection due to the content and accessible price. The collection pulls together pretty much everything they did in their short career before the sad loss of curtis. For such an important band, it is shocking to realise that this wonderful box contains pretty much everything - thank goodness they were prolific enough to lay down this much material! As you would imagine the songs are often sparse and atmospheric, punctuated by weird and wonderful sound effects. The guitars are often sibilant, the drums and symbals prominent in the mix and Curtis's vocal delivery hypnotic and mesmerising. The tortured soul is often on view, coming through in his words and vocal delivery. Outstanding, occasionally moving and utterly unique.

If you are a JD fan the what's not to love? I own all the albums on CD and pretty much bought this for the Warsaw tracks. Now I have one neat box set containing 99% of the material. I also now have some live versions that really demonstrate what a dynamic band they must have been to see live and a cool booklet with some great information in it. It's not in the CD cabinet with the 100s of other CDS, it has pride of place on the bookcase. A snip for under 20 quid.

I decided to write this on the 35th anniversary of Ian Curtis's death. Joy Division were one of my favorite bands and I still regularly play the albums. This box set is nearly all you need. Disc's 1 & 2 contain each album and recordings in those periods. Disc 3 is the one with remastered rare sessions.
Joy Division, Wire, PiL, Magazine, Cabaret Voltaire soundtracked Britain with music and sounds like no others. Joy Division introduced me to a world of art, books and music that shaped my youth.

Essential band!

I bought the boxset for multiple reasons:

1) I liked Joy Division, not to extremes, but with interest and a sort of reverence. They encompass an important period in music and were the epitome for a lot of things (feelings of detachment, social exclusion, disbelonging...) so I guessed purchasing the boxset would be a good investment.

2) Value for money. Because honestly, you won't find anything related to Joy Division get better than this. It literally contains everything (meaning: live versions, studio albums, b-sides, unreleased stuff).

Upon receiving the set, I was ecstatic. Felt like a little child again.
Then came a tinge of dissapointment. I liked it but it didn't click. I couldn't listen to it all the way through. Which I considered to be a shame.

Then a week ago, something clicked whilst listening. The kind of click that says 'hey, this isn't so bad after all'. Then I got it. I literally listened open-mouthed all the way through. It was unbelievably powerful. They lyrics, the toned-down melodies, the latent weltschmerz... It has everything I need, all the time.

So please buy this, if you don't, you might end up regretting it and with a boxset this extensive, there's no reason to save up. I promise you.
