All the strands of each life intertwine with the ups and downs of human experience, with the awful death of James, resulting in Isabelle almost losing the plot, with the gradual deepening of her relationship with Angelo and all the guilt and self doubt it engenders and her desperate attempts to get Simon to give her more within their marriage. The story is moving and intriguing. There are so many themes contained within the story, not least of all, the different kinds of love Isabelle demonstrates with each man. Her deep loyalty and love, formed by years of marriage and companionship with her husband, the almost psychic bond with her best friend, her "soul mate", who knows exactly what she wants because he feels it too, and the passionate physical and emotional love for her new man. None really overlaps with the other, but serves to give Isabelle a kind of completeness that few of us experience.
Against the background of the menopause, the end of one phase and the beginning of another in a woman's life, it shows a positive outlook that many people do not experience after this event. It is a kind of freedom, from fertility and risk, from dependent children, and so on, a kind of awakening of the self. I know when I reached this milestone, I began to realise I could please myself more, I could follow my interests and make new friends for my new life. Sadly, there is no sign of Angelo!!! Menopause is such a monumental occurrence in a woman's life - many regard it as an end to normal existence - empty nest syndrome, ceasing to care what one looks like, piling on the pounds - the list is long and painful. The one love that Isabelle discovers in the end is probably the most important - self love. As my nana used to say "If you don't love yourself, why should anyone else".
Certainly there are unanswered questions in the book - her early life, James early life, the early days of her marriage and what attracted her to her husband and, of course......... what happens next? Angelina has intimated there will be further books featuring these characters and I cannot wait to discover more.
I would read it all over again as I enjoyed the courageous spirit and sheer optimism of this writer!
