Product Description

Merry Hell continue their rise in popularity with their second album, 'Head Full of Magic, Shoes Full of Rain', a stunning collection of uplifting and punchy folk-rock. Merry Hell embody all that is great about English folk rock in the 21st century. Stirring songwriting, striking male-and-female counterpoint vocals and glorious musicianship are the hallmarks of 'Head Full Of Magic, Shoes Full Of Rain', their exhilarating second album. The seven-piece combine folk sensibilities with rock energy and punk attitude to glorious effect. Featuring a guest appearance from Dave Swarbrick, the album is sure to see Merry Hell build on the enormous critical acclaim they've already enjoyed.

Let me start by saying I'm giving this 4 stars because it's not as good as "Blink...and you'll miss it" but that doesn't mean it's a bad album. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would.

For reasons I can't explain Merry Hell avoided my radar for 2 years and 2 albums so I bought this within days of Blink and have listened to the both repeatedly as separate albums and on "artist random play" on my iPod. Every listening leaves me with the same sense that I just prefer the songs on Blink to the ones on this album. I don't think it's a production thing, I just think the songs on Blink are slightly stronger.

I'm in agreement with reviewer Ian Burdon when he says there are some good songs here that are not necessarily good Merry Hell songs. I also agree with his view that every track on Blink was a gem but a couple here miss the mark. I've dug out my old Tansads albums and I'm struggling to tell the difference between the version of Iron Man on this album and the original version on Flock so I'm wondering just why it's here at all. Yes it's a great song but so are most of the others here. Build a Mansion is probably the weakest track and I'm not sure why Andrew is doing a Simon Nicol impression on Emerald Green but other than that I don't have any complaints.

One point I would make is that Merry Hell are not Tansads and on this album, Iron Man aside, are clearly trying to emphasize that more than they did on Blink. For us old Tansads fans that's going to take some getting used to. I'd like to think it's a transition state so I'm looking forward to the next installment.

This band are truly awesome. Their music is first rate but the lyrics to their songs are what set them apart from the run of the mill. Each song speaks directly to you almost with a personal connection. Having said that its all good fun music not a bunch of boring worthies. Live they are really entertaining.

he stood in't yard crying "what ails thee husband" said small but beautifully formed. "Nowt love" he said. She noticed the sweat on his old jacket and the shine on his docs. "listen to this" he said spinning the disc towards the machine. The tapping started like a hammer on an old spade then the music and voices, gravel and treacle, love and sawdust, heart and polish. "what is that lovely noise me darling" said small and beautiful "THAT IS MERRY HELL AND THEY ARE JOYOUS" said the old man. they laughed cried and danced.

Having discovered 'Merry Hell' at the 'Big Session' festival and loved there first album, I was looking out for their second to get some of the tunes I'd heard in concert. This album is as strong as the first with songs / lyrics that are as insightful as poignant. My fav track (and this is a close call) is 'Let the music speak for itself', which was done as an encore at Wickham festival & sums the band's philosophy. Keep writing: I look out for album 3!

Merry Hell's debut album was 2011's drug of choice, addicted as I was to its constant musical highs that still delight at each listening. Its follow up Head Full Of Magic, Shoes Full Of Rain is already proving to be just as addictive, as it threatens to be the soundtrack to the coming summer with its wonderful tunes and lyrics that don't feel the need to be cryptic to be clever. Individual track listing would no doubt be useful but if you loved Blink And You Miss It just buy this and you'll fall in love all over again. It's exuberant, it's thought provoking, and it has the gorgeous habit of having you wake up with one of its tracks in your head. Could there be a better way of starting a day?

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of The Tansads, Merry Hell have captured the hearts of many.
The first album "Blink and you Miss it" was a wonderful collection of well crafted songs, with great melodies and vocals.

The worry was whether the second album would live up to expectations....Worry ye not!!!! This surpasses all expectations.. and then some!

I just hope that they continue to soar. They're a great bunch, very talented musicians with a real social conscience.

Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

Second album by Merry Hell is fantastic - even better than the first!!

If you agree and love their music - have a listen to music by The Tansads (Merry Hell mk 1).

Hope you enjoy listening to the album(s) as much as I have.

Head Full Of Magic, Shoes full Of Rain....
It has poignancy, humour, phenomenal musicianship, buckets of gravel, shovels and hammers (you need to see them live!)
Head Full of Magic is a ridiculously good album that follows on from Blink and You Miss It. Just buy and listen to them both and change your viewpoint of what you consider 'folk' music. I did and I like the change. Both albums are on repeat in my car and my thrash death metalhead son of 28 is nearly a convert. Result. (nearly)
