Product Description

Novum continues to celebrate the magnificent work of New College Choir - in the classics of the choral repertory, and in its byways. Here, in Haydn's Nelson Mass, they tackle one of the most frequently climbed summits in the choral range. The metaphor is not misplaced: the work makes high demands on singers and orchestra alike, not least in the coloratura writing for the solo soprano (here sung brilliantly by the leading treble), and the virtuoso string writing (delivered with youthful panache by New Century Baroque). These qualities give the New College performance an unusual lustre and presence. The Mass is coupled with Haydn's ever-popular motet Insanae et vanae curae.

Review

Haydn's magnificent Miss in Angustiis of 1798- the so called Nelson Mass composed at the height of the Napolenic Wars-has come in for some dramatic recordings. This latest account by the forces of New College, Oxford, is less punchy, more litugical than some, but scarcely less intent in purpose. Performance **** Recording *** --BBC Music Magazine, Apr'13

Although the need for another "Nelson Mass" in the catalogues at this time may at first seem a little dubious, this new disc is most certainly worth buying for the truly remarkable singing of the solo boy treble Jonty Ward.
Haydn's "Nelson Mass" is still used liturgically at some of our largest cathedrals, as in utilising a small orchestra -of strings, trumpets and timpani- it proves a most effective way to crown the choral year -often at its close as the choristers head off for summer vacation.
With its martial orchestral effects as also its sumblime moments, it can be a most appropriate mass-setting in using orchestral forces with the choir without breaking the cathedral budget!
The noted Haydn biographer H.C.Robbins Landon suggested that this mass is "arguably Haydn's greatest single composition" but in reality, its popularity has never had the audience-appeal of his oratorio "The Creation" or his most famous symphonies such as the "Surprise" or the "Clock."
However, this disc is unique in recordings of this work in having the vituosic soprano part sung by the choir's head-chorister Jonty Ward.
Jonty's voice is a truly remarakable one -with a most mellifluous tone. But he is most intelligent in his mastery of it; -always in total control in the taxing coloratura runs of the opening movement, and never forcing it beyond its means.
The boy treble-voice is always said to be at its finest when it is mature and on the verge of breaking, -and it appears that this recording was most fortunately made exactly at this point.

This recording certainly does it for me; I love it so much that I might buy a second copy in case I wear the first one out. After this breath-taking performance I do hope the outstanding treble soloist Jonty Ward isn't feeling that the rest of his life is going to be an anti-climax ...

I appreciate Higgingbottom"s claim that all soloists are "in house" but the production is spoiled in t estimation by the boy treble being placed too far back and so lost in the choir. Apart from this, not a bad recording although I prefer that of St. Paul's Cathedral some thirty years back; the last LP I purchased!

5.0 out of 5 stars A nicely put together programme 29 Dec. 2012

Too often we listen to a Mass with just the six parts of the Ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Credo, Beneductus, Agnus Dei), but this recording also includes (in its proper position) an Offertory hymn, 'Insanae et Vanae Curae'. This was a work that Haydn originally composed for his update of the oratorio 'Il Ritorno di Tobia' around 1783, and which he revised in 1797 to make it a suitable sacred work. The performance is very nice, and the music is late Haydn at his best, which is to say, as good as it gets.
