I have given it every chance, but while it has its moments, it grieves me to report that this fourth studio outing for Aisles falls way short of the mark.
After the brilliance of the first three this is a bitter blow. Either they have lost a critical composer with personnel changes since 4.45am; or they got so wrapped up in the 'concept' and trying to tell a coherent story, that they lost sight of the actual music. There are some saving graces. The Poet Part 1 is a good opener, and the teased tracks Upside Down and Club Hawaii are both close to achieving the heights of earlier efforts. Pale Blue Dot is a lovely song too....but elsewhere the vocals are too shrill and strained, the melodies are lacking, the experimentation - especially for the first three quarters of Ch7 and the dirge-like closing number In The Probe, are all just steps too far. In summary...this is a serious miss-step and if I were responsible for managing this hitherto excellent ensemble I would urge them to get back in the studio a.s.a.p...and produce something with much more of an instrumental bias, dripping with the kind of infectious melodies that permeated all three of their previous offerings, and where the vocals are deployed, with clever and complex harmonies sure...but also sticking within the achievable ranges of the vocalists, rather than stretching them to places they should frankly never go.

Having read Oakers' balanced and sincere review I feared the worst, although having played the whole thing from start to finish last night I am relieved to say i really enjoyed it. I'm not about to pick holes in the previous review as they are of course perfectly entitled to their opinion. All I'd say is that if you are a fan of the band or progressive rock in general fear not as there is every chance you'll love this as much as I did and as much as the band's previous albums.
I was a bit worried about the vocals given the other review but i thought they (and the writing process behind them) were great and better frankly than the current Haken and Tesseract albums. Buy with confidence and don't just take my word for it as it had a very positive review in Classic Prog magazine too.

Once again, I decided to buy this on the strength of enjoying the track 'Club Hawaii', that was on a demo disc. Sadly, the album turned out not to be of the same quality as that one song.

Basically, I never really bonded with the first disc at all, although you do get the rich sound of a rocket being launched in one part. I could here plenty of creativity though.
Thankfully, disc 2 is better. The style seems more choral. 'Terra' could have been written by The Enid, and has a very strong ending. The next three tracks are okay as well, which lead on to the aforementioned track 'Club Hawaii', which is, ultimately, the centrepiece. 'Falling', which follows, is also in the theme, whilst 'In the probe' represents a dismal end to proceedings.

Judging by disc 2, Aisles would have been better trying to compress their music into a single album, instead of the double, and this in turn would have made the price more accessible to those wanting to try it.
