I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two books in the Moonshine Task Force series but there was just something about Havoc that grabbed me that little bit more.
Holden (Havoc) and Leighton were great together. The story, for me, had a real 'family & belonging' vibe that worked really well.
Holden is a great guy. He's caring, protective, patient and seriously hot. His initial reasoning for his marriage to Leighton is for her safety, so it's a marriage of convenience as far as his new wife is concerned but from the get go, the union means a lot more to him.
Leighton has never felt like she belonged. From a family pretty much hated by everyone who knows them she never fitted in at home or within the community. Holden is her safe place and she grows comfortable in her relationship with him, even while knowing it's unlikely to last once the threats to her have passed. The thing is, even though not as strongly as Havoc, Leighton is beginning to look at their relationship in a different light too....... maybe this could be THE place where she finally does belong.
Thing between the pair were a slow burn. Holden doesn't want to spook her and Leighton doesn't want to push for things he might not be willing to offer, but watching things grow and develop between them was fab. They were so good together that you could do nothing but root for them from the get-go. I loved how they got to know each other and how their marriage became more than just a convenience.
This was a well written engaging and heartwarming story from Laramie Briscoe and I can't wait to see what she gives us next in this series!
Havoc gets 5 great big stars from me!!!
I can never pick a favourite when it comes to this series. I fell in love with Renegade just as much as I did with Tank and now Havoc. If there is one thing that sets Havoc apart from its predecessors is that it has a somewhat milder sexual drive. Don't get me wrong, it's hot as hell, but at the same time you have this tantric anticipation that plays havoc (pun not intended) with your emotions and libido. The sex isn't as risqué as in Renegade and Tank, however it is bursting with feeling and tenderness— even when it gets a little rough. Maybe hold the little, 'cause Holden 'Havoc' Thompson sure knows how to take rough to a whole new level.
Over half of the story Holden and Leighton tiptoe and skirt around the edges of their chemistry— that's not to say that they don't dabble in each other once in a while. I expected this book to have a lot more 'hands on' in between the sheets, shower wall, couch... kitchen... action, but it went completely against my expectations, and contrary to what I thought I would feel— I LOVED IT. I loved that although they are married, they take the time to get to know each other and earn each others' trust. Although their feelings are pretty clear and there is that element of insta-love, the follow through is very much a slow, teasing, tantric burn that consumes you. I also felt that this gave the story integrity and a solid working ground. In short, Laramie smashed it, yet again. The plot development was faultless, and considering that the advanced copy I was sent for review was unedited, that just shows how brilliantly talented Ms. Briscoe is as an author. That the faultlessness didn't just stop at the plot development or even the character development— well, that is nothing short of phenomenal.
When it came down to the action side of the plot, again it was a little more cloak and dagger than the previous two books. I was kept on the edge of my seat waiting for the proverbial poop to hit the fan. Again, there was that element of skirting around the danger, bumping shoulders with it and having a taste of the thrill of it. It was just so well done because it would've been so easy to have an over dramatic and constant confrontational clash happening all the way through, however, this plot really embedded itself on the thriller aspect. Needless to say that I was buried in sexual and danger tension all the way through.
In all honesty it came as no surprise that Laramie didn't just nail the plot, but also personified characters that really embodied the storyline. I absolutely fell in love with Leigh, and I cannot wait to have more of her in the upcoming books. I hope that we do see a lot of her in Ace's and Menace's stories. Her interaction with Menace's kid, Caleb, is so beautiful and even with Stella, Whitney and Ryan's daughter. Not to mention her integrity and loyalty to those she loves. Her relationship with Brooks (her brother), is beautiful and gritty, and I really loved that through her affection towards her brother she finds redemption for his wrongs. Again, I'm hoping to see more of Brooks. I'd like to see him become the person that she loves, or maybe rather show us the person that she adores and fights for so hard. I was so happy that Holden is so open to her feelings for her brother. Especially with all the pain and grief that he caused him, Tank, and their team. To say that I loved Havoc is an understatement. But the reality is that there aren't any words to rightly convey exactly how I feel about this story. It was everything and more and I cannot wait for the next story in the series— Ace.
Holden Thompson aka Havoc is the task force leader and a cop. His life up to now has been centred on his work and his friends, with little time for any relationships with women. That is until Leighton Strather comes into his life and he feels an overwhelming need to protect her. Especially from the threat from her father, the biggest moonshiner in the county.
Leighton has always felt guilt. Guilt for her mother leaving her at a young age and guilt for what her family are doing to make money. Living in a crime family pushes her to seek a new life away from it all and she finds this when she meets Holden. When a marriage of convenience is thrown into the mix both Leighton and Holden grab it with both hands. They know there is an attraction between them that after an explosive kiss, they try to fight back from. However being in a marriage and living together, the close proximity to each other can only lead to one thing and that thing is fighting back their own insecurities and hoping that this marriage can become real.
The story picks up a year after they have been married and I would have preferred to have been involved from the very start. It was made known in the previous book what had happened but not through the POV of Leighton or Holden which was a shame. It didn’t detract my enjoyment of the story but would have just given that little more depth. Holden is twelve years older than Leighton and is one of his insecurities whereas Leighton doesn’t feel she is good enough for him.
I loved the chemistry between the two but there was a lot of soul searching and holding back. I just wanted to bash both their heads together and shout ‘Just get on with it!’ at times. Eventually though they can no longer ignore the passion igniting between them and wow when they went for it they definitely WENT FOR IT! It was HOT!
It was great to catch up with the other couples from the previous books and good to see who could be next for their story. I’m thinking maybe Ace?
Overall another great addition to the series and for me Holden is the one I was most waiting for to read about. He is my favourite to date. Leighton was also likeable and I liked this pairing. A good match. I can’t wait to read more in the series. Four stars.
