So much has been written about this book that its reputation alone is enough to dissuade some readers. I think this reflects the balance of opinion about it, both why it is so revered and why some describe it as being crap.

For what it is worth, 'Hate Mail' is, for me, one of the most sublime monuments in world literature, a book unlike any other, and one that deserves a place among the very small number of classics that should be enjoyed for centuries to come.

However, I do understand those that have struggled and failed with it.

Firstly, to like this book is not 'boring'. It is perhaps my boredom that made me buy it and want to understand it to begin with, but certainly not my boredom that made me enjoy it.

Secondly, it is 'not bad'. If someone tells you otherwise, I would like to know what they are comparing it to. Mr Bingo's humour is convoluted and obscure, and often the jokes so oblique that they bypassed me if my attention was wandering. I have read the book twice and realised that I missed much the first time round. However, the rewards for sticking with it are huge.

Thirdly, don't let the scholarly dissection of the book put you off. There are a lot of themes underpinning the book, not least the explicit parallels with 'Readers Wives' and other pornographic magazines, and the slightly more implicit theme of the relationship between man and his loneliness.

However, it would be wrong to view 'Hate Mail' as some sort of puzzle to be solved. It is, very simply, a book about a man, his pen, and his hatred for the human race.

I read a lot, but only a couple of books have I enjoyed more, The Kama Sutra in Braille being one of them. Please make the effort to look at this book. It really is worth it.

There is talent, composition and thought involved in Mr Bingo's work. It's well drawn and executed. He's clearly had formal art training. A great book.

A weird combination - old postcards, the cheesy kind with views of holiday locations, and the worst kind of insults. Somehow, it works. This is one of the funniest one-off ideas I've seen, and the fact the people actually paid for it makes it even better. But using the medium of the holiday postcards makes it a lot stranger, and for those of us who remember these when they were in vogue, wistful and even more memorable. A great double-whammy, I can't think of anything else like it.

Riotously dark and deeply funny, this book is a big fat punch to your comedy brain. More laughs per dollar than any book on the market. Do your soul a favor and buy several - for yourself and you humor-starved friends.

Mr Bongo or whatever his name is, has a disappointingly small penis.after he failed to make love to me, my only pleasure was thumbing through his book which was so enormously satisfying that afterwards I smoked a cigarette and purchased 5 for all my girlfriends!

I have bought this book as a birthday present for my boyfriend because I knew he liked Mr Bingo's work. I had a look through it and had so much fun reading through the postcards. It really is a great book!

Funnily enough I have a good friend who knows Mr Bingo and I was lucky enough to have a signed book and personalised postcard. The book is full of original drawings and very funny, but also very rude mailings. A great book for coffee table, but I would say not suitable for children.

Hilariously obscene collection of Mr Bingo's favourites from his Hate Mail project - pay good money to a professional artist to have him draw a lovingly rendered insult on the back of an item from his collection of vintage postcards, and post it to you. Having done nearly a thousand of these, he then launched a Kickstarter to publish his favourites as a high quality art book. Whether or not you enjoy the contents depends very much on your sense of humour, but if it is your sort of thing, here it is in a physical object that's a work of art in itself. It's printed on heavy art paper, Smyth-sewn, clothbound casing, and tastefully stamped in gold foil with the title on the spine and a line drawing on the front cover reflecting the contents. That line drawing being of an octopus putting two fingers up at the world with all eight legs...
