The Hash House Harriers - sometimes called the drinking club with a running problem. It is the largest non-competitive running club in the world. Hashing involves running from a pub, following a trail of flour around a circular course for five miles or so, and then returning to the pub for a beer or ten. This is four years in the life of 'Navigator' - a geographically-challenged hasher from the Isle of Wight. He travels with the Hash to wonderful places like Denmark, Germany, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Bradford, Howarth and Cardiff. He also visits Harwich; 'miss Harwich' - no, not a beauty contest - more a piece of lifestyle advice! Hashing involves running, drinking, singing - and in some cases taking your clothes off, but not necessarily in that order. It is a fun activity that should not be taken seriously in any way. This is a light-hearted yet highly entertaining read, laced with the mischief and adventures that befall an 'adult' social club with a wickedly-juvenile approach to their shared hobby; running. or was that drinking?

This book beautifully describes in fifteen short chapters what Hashing is all about with each chapter describing a different event ranging from local Hashing on the Isle Of Wight to international events in Holland, France, Denmark taking in events around the UK as well.
These stories are written with a great thread of humour and, as a Hasher myself who knows some of the characters in the book and who has been to some of the events described, I thoroughly enjoyed reviving lots of good memories. Certainly, the St Trinians party at Westonbirts Girls School will never be forgotton!
I enjoyed and laughed out loud at this book. I read it in one go - literally 'I could not put it down'!
Do buy this book - it could well change your life. Part of the proceeds go to the Isle of Wight Hospice so buy copies for friends and family as well - what great presents!
Im a busy working mum and honestly just for the sheer relief I would look forward to reading little excerpts from marks experiences to brighten my day.
I have never hashed before until last year when i was getting divorced. Mark writes with such an easy lightness and jovial wit, its a pleasure to just dip into this delightful read. He takes me on an informed and totally absurd but believable trip with his fellow hashers constantly changing and reminding me just how much fun being human and hashing can be for anyone and everyone.
Its one of those you dont just read but dive into when you need to ,just the escapist experience and simple enjoyment. It took me a few weeks to read because i didnt want to miss anything. Its like going on a trip around europe and savouring each new "hash" as a unique short story all rolled into this book and wanting MORE!!
ps its even educational!!
So thank you navigator, (mr williams) for making me smile on more than one occasion!
The modern world of Hashing that Mark Williams describes with such vivid detail, enthusiasm and wit, is now an internationally organised group of small local running clubs, open to all, whose objectives seem to be to promote good natured and harmless fun, fitness and an unbridled support for local breweries! If you want to learn more about the drinking club with the running problem, you should not hesitate to buy this book. You certainly won't regret it...and who knows, one day you might find yourself hashing too!
