Product description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's customary to worry about the quality of a game licensed from a film, but Starship Troopers is over two years old and spawned a CGI animated series before it. Given the warmongering plot, the theme is also very game-friendly.

Based in a 3-D real-time strategy arena, the underlining goal is reflected in the one-track plot--to destroy the bugs over a series of increasingly difficult missions in your constant fight against the bugs of Klendathu.

There is the usual series of training missions to get you started but they aren't compulsory. Move the troopers and they will fire for themselves when greeted by the enemy. In a homage to the classic game Syndicate, there are various instant behaviour modes that are colour coded, with the red heightening awareness and paranoia to make troopers shoot anything that moves--but that includes non-essential, ammo-wasting targets. The lowest blue mode puts the troopers into stealth position, where they will crawl or sneak around to avoid detection. Sometimes it's more fun to drop your squads on the battlefield and see how they get on--and that is one way to teach yourself the game.

The graphics are functional at best, but the music pushes the film's atmosphere to the forefront of the action all the time if left on. The viewpoint can be controlled via the mouse, another development of 3-D RTS games this year. The only very minor niggle with the control system is the loss of an occasional straggling soldier, which can be frustrating when on the retreat with only 12 troops that mission, but that's another good reason to complete training and memorise the regrouping shortcut keys.

Installation is an average 510Mb maximum. It's worth checking out once you've ploughed your way through any of the other 3-D RTS games of the year or Command & Conquer Red Alert 2. --Kenneth Henry
