This Cluedo isn't for wimps!

This game will appeal to anyone interested in Harry Potter or Cluedo. But if you think it won't test an adult, think again! The appearance of the Dark Mark (via turns of the House wheels, or the special die) will frequently deplete your investigating character of House points as trouble rears its head! If those points drop to zero, you're out of the game! This makes the game tougher. And this is why some players have expressed frustration with it.

There is no way in the rules to restore your character's House points! So ensure that your character quickly gets as many Help cards (allies, spells and items) as you can whilst crossing the board. This will help keep you in the game, whilst investigating which suspicious character is a kidnapper, how they did the deed, and in which room.

If that tip's not enough, then do what I did - and add a modification to the rules! My idea was to lay 'Extra Help' squares around the board(face down, along with some red-herring blanks), and have them restore lost House points with comments like "Professor Snape grudgingly awards you 10HP for passing a Potions test". In a test run, these helped three friends and I to play a game for over an hour and a half. Only in the last ten minutes did 2 of us drop out of the game!

Other points: the design is good (including the locking/unlocking doors and changing secret passages), and the cards cover a range of characters (even Cormac McLaggen gets mentioned!). Shame that Profs Moody and Lupin don't get referred to by name.

Summary - my friends and I enjoyed it. Just do what you can to keep those House points in your deck!

This in my opinion is one of the best ever versions of Cluedo, it's almost as if Cluedo was made for Harry Potter. The game takes place in Hogwarts and the board art is beautiful, in the same style as the end-credits to Prisoner of Azkaban. It's like looking at the Marauder's Map. Doorways open and close on die rolls, unfortunate events can reduce house points, and characters can gain allies as the game progresses. These allies serve to protect the player from the aforementioned unfortunate events, often necessary as when the player loses all house points they are out of the game.

The only odd thing about it is that one of the six players is randomly kidnapped and has to sit out. The purpose is to rescue that player by discovering who kidnapped them, where and with what. This means that it is really only a five player game.

I also have the later Harry Potter version of Cluedo called the 'World Of Harry Potter' which is set all over the Potter universe, with rooms such as Gringotts and the Shrieking Shack. The later version in my opinion is not as good, so if you have the opportunity to choose, I recommend this version over the later one.

A great variation on the original CLUEDO. Played a great deal with our 8 year old who had no problem understanding this game, and could have played it age 7 (despite the 9-14 suggested age range). A known Harry Potter character disappears and you have to guess WHO did it out of known Harry Potter "baddies", WHERE did they do it chosen from recognisable haunts of Hogwarts and with WHAT was it done from known Harry Potter objects etc. It doesn't matter if you don't know Harry Potter - you soon will! The original "secret passages" now disappear and re-appear & the addition of Dark Mark cards mean you can lose valuable House Points. I would highly recommend this board game - both kids and adults have fun (and you never know who will win!)

This game is fantastic. I found it whilst looking online for a Birthday present for my boyfriend! He loves Harry Potter and I thought this would be ideal. The board is great with only a little time needed to put the game together. A small degree of Harry Potter knowledge makes the game more fun but is not essential. I would advise people to not take the house point deductions too seriously and slip a few to those running low to enjoy the game to its full potential! A brilliant gift idea.

An amazing game providing you're not an idiot

The game of cluedo is one with so little replay-ability it is hardly worth playing. Harry Potter cluedo is an incredibly enjoyable update on the original.

From the off, the board and cards that come with the game are very elegant, which gives a great atmosphere before you've even begun. The main premise of the game remains that you must go round the Hogwarts rooms accusing typical HP villains of abducting a witch or wizard. Things really hot up though because of the constant threat of losing your house points by picking up 'dark mark' cards. Rather than the usual monotonous trape though rooms you must now balance this with picking up help cards to stop you from losing all your house points and consequently getting out of the game entirely.

The Harry Potter references do come thick and fast throughout but anyone expecting any different should probably learn to read things before they buy them. Also the game is certainly a bit difficult but there's no joy in a game without risk is there?

I fully recommend this 'toy' to all fans of the HP series.

It's years since I have played Cluedo. My 9 year old asked for this version for Christmas and I played it with him and his siblings aged 6 and 11. Although my 6 year old needed lots of help, he didn't need as much as I had worried he might and considering it was the first time we played and I had to keep referring to the instructions it went really well. They have all asked to play it again which is a real sign of approval. Would recommend this as a family game, especially if you like Harry Potter, but alot of fun even if you are not.
