First off, I was rather taken aback by the visuals this game has to offer; by no means am I saying that I was disappointed, just surprised. In previous Harvest Moon games the graphics haven't been great, but I believe they were far more artistic than what this game has to offer. HM:ANB's graphics are what people call very 'block printed', in which means that there isn't really any tone in the colours, such as to signify shaded areas for an example. I am aware that previous versions of Harvest Moon also didn't have this feature, but they still had far more detail in the grass and flowered areas, in which I think this game is slightly lacking. However, I still think it looks pretty nevertheless.
Another thing that I really liked in this game was the characters. The characters are very much more developed, especially more than in its successor, Story of Seasons. The characters in this game all have very likeable personalities, and they are also very diverse from each other as well. What I do have to say is that the personalities in this game can be called somewhat 'predictable' for a Nintendo game: there's the happy guy, moody guy, guy with a huge ego and the guys with impeccable manners. I found these personalities quite predictable, however, I loved them all at the same time. Another thing about the characters in this game is that gaining Friendship Points is VERY easy. Just talking to a character once a day gives you +100 FP with that villager, so making friends/relationships is much easier than in previous instalments in the franchise. The character portraits in this game are, as always, very good! The character pictures are one of my favourite things about this franchise, as they are again, very colourful and detailed, which gives the character much more personality and likeability. What I am disappointed about with this game is that in previous versions of Harvest Moon games when you talked to a villager they used to give you a little laugh or sigh sound effect which was specific to that one character so we knew what they sounded like. This game did not have any character voices at all. I found this highly disappointing, despite being such a minor thing in the game.
FARMING AND STUFF
I found that actual farming part of the game slightly hard at times, because after watering all of your crops, fertilizing them and then going to harvest your livestock produce, you will be lucky if you have any stamina left by the end of it. This is very frustrating at times because it runs out quite quickly, and you can only re-boost your stamina by eating something good (such as a big meal if you want to give yourself a lot more stamina again), go to sleep, or go to the Clinic if you have gotten that far in the game, but you will have to pay a small fee for the Clinics services.
One of the main goals in this game is the 'Restoration project', which is restoring the town to a better state. I found these rather easy to do, however, I had to wait a whole season because there are no chamomile in the winter. This wasn't really a big bother to meas I just worked on other stuff instead, but it really did slow my progress. As you get further into the plans, you will need to get ores and itens such as Glass Stone for an example in order to build something, such as a building. These are VERY easy to collect once you open the Mine again, and then you just have to play the waiting game until you obtain all of the minerals that you need. I'm not sure how the mining process was in other games, but it is so very easy in this one as long as you have the right hammers.
I found cooking quite disappointing in this game too, as here you can only cook something if you have the recipe, unlike in other games you could just get recipes off the internet and make things like that. In this one you HAVE to find the recipes yourself. Its not such a big deal, but some of the stuff I know I can make, I can't, because I don't have the darned recipe. That's it.
I do like the Pet feature in this game. You have to build a pet house on your farm before you can have a pet. In this game your pets live seperatly from your farm house. However if you like, you can keep a pet as just a house pet by simply putting it inside of you farmhouse, and then it will not leave unless you more it. I found this quite nice, as in previous games I didn't really enjoy having like, 5 dogs and cats running everywhere, as it just looked messy at times. Pet food is still 250G per can, which is still, to me, pretty expensive when buying in large units.
STAMINA IN STORMS AND SUCH
When you go out in a storm in this game, it has a major toll on your health, causing your stamina to fun out almost 3 times as fast. Was it like that in all games? If so, I am only just noticing it now, as I find it hard enough coping with the stamina as it is :S Its best to only limit yourself to a few jobs on storm days, as like saying, it knocks your stamina like a truck hitting a snowman or something. Also on stamina, the day after you have fainted you will have the same effects as you would when going out in stormy weather. Your stamina will go down a lot quicker, making it hard to do things, but once you get the Clinic you can change this.
CUSTOMISATION OF OWN CHARACTER/HERO
I was happy that we could customise our own characters in this game, as in others we would be stuck with a default hero who's appearance could not be changed. However, despite there being a TON of hair and eye colours to chose from, there is not so many actual types to chose from. You can chose from 3 difference faces for your character, and about 10 or slightly more hairstyles. This may seem like a lot, but they all just don't seem right to me. Picky it may be, but I would prefer it if there were more character customisation options.
There is many other things in this game I could talk about and pick out their own flaws and such, but I'm going to wind this review down now. Overall, I think that game is far, far, FAR better than its predecessor HM:ToTT, and I have found this game overly enjoyable, however, I have given myself a RSI in both of my hands, making it so I can't play it as often as I would like. However, this game is still fantastic, and if your a Harvest Moon fan, buying it goes without saying, but if you are new to the franchise, then I think this game is a good starting point, as many other people have mentioned that the first Spring is basicly a tutorial. Would have given 4.5 stars if that were possible on Amazon.co.uk!
Thank you for reading, and I hope this helps! :D
