Just when it seems that there cannot possibly be another twist to the Harry Potter tale, Stephen Fry dons his haughtiest and naughtiest tones to bring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to vibrant life on audio.
Harry Potter has spent the first 10 years of his life at the mercy of the dreadful Dursleys--the aunt, uncle and fat, spoilt brat of a cousin who reluctantly gave him a home after the death of his mother and father. But on his 11th birthday Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy, and despite the best efforts of his hideous relatives he escapes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his new life as a trainee wizard. And the rest, as they say, is history...
As Harry battles against the evils thrown in his path, Stephen Fry injects the proceedings with a wry, dry and extremely contagious humour that perfectly suits the tale, wringing out the best in Harry and his cohorts as they get to grips with their new lives at the sharp end of Hogwarts. Fry's innate upper-class drone is perfectly suited to the telling of this most magical tale, cracking into the high-pitched squawking of Hermione the swat, or the gentle tones of the firm but fair Dumbledore, or the evil sniping of slimey Snape at precisely the right moments, adding further atmosphere and intensity to the story
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a fine story and much has been written about its success but until you have heard Fry's cracking reading of this most magical of stories then you simply haven't lived. As with any audio book, this one is perfect for car journeys and an ideal way of introducing reluctant readers to the magic that is Harry Potter. The artwork is really lovely, and would make great prints for your wall I think. You have art on the back, front and spine of the book which is great. The 'Harry Potter' and title are done in shiny gold and really pops.
Slipcase has an image of Hogwarts looking out across the lake, which is pretty.
I'm very pleased and the item as a whole is excellent. Makes a great gift!
These re-prints are beautifully made. I purchased the Children's edition, as I heard some negative comments regarding the Adult re-prints and I certainly don't regret it. The font is marginally larger in the first 3 books, but returns to the commonly smaller font size from Goblet of Fire onward. The covers are still very well designed, despite them being the child variants, and the book/page quality is lovely. If you're familiar with the Game of Thrones books (slightly different from the magical world of Harry Potter, I must admit), then that may give you an idea of the page and cover quality, as they're very similar.
Needless to say the contents of the books are some of the best fantasy literature that has ever been published, and is enjoyable for children and adults alike. The perfect set for introducing children to the Harry Potter world, and for adults likewise.
I was skeptical at first about buying this set because I knew the covers were different to the originals but as soon as I opened it up and took my first look at it all worries were put aside. It is just magical. The box is sturdy and the books fit in it perfectly, the pages are thin but not too delicate and the words pop on the page. I would like to note I believe these books are slightly smaller than the original and so the font size is also a bit smaller which isn't a problem for me but may be for others.
The only negative I have is I find the books difficult to get out the box, I had to tip it upside down and tap it whilst trying to ensure the other 6 didn't fall out but I believe this is a struggle worth taking.
Would definately recommend to others
