Amazon Review

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is JK Rowling's enchanting debut novel. This magical, gripping, brilliant book--a future classic to be sure--will leave children clamouring for a sequel. Say you've spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand and jellybeans that come in every flavour, including strawberry, curry, grass and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter as the story unfolds. In the non-magical human world--the world of "Muggles"--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is renowned as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's altogether different from his aunt, uncle and spoilt, pig-like cousin Dudley.

A mysterious letter delivered by the friendly giant Hagrid, wrenches Harry from his dreary, Muggle-ridden existence: "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". Of course, Uncle Vernon yells most unpleasantly, "I am not paying for some crackpot old fool to teach him magic tricks!" Soon enough, however, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts with his owl Hedwig... and that's where the real adventure--humorous, haunting and suspenseful--begins. (Ages 8-13) --Karin Snelson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

'Funny, imaginative, magical ... Rowling has woken up a whole generation to reading. In the 2020s, thirty-something book-lovers will know each other by smug references to Diagon Alley and Quidditch' The Times 'Has all the makings of a classic ... Rowling uses classic narrative devices with flair and originality and delivers a complex and demanding plot in the form of a hugely entertaining thriller' Scotsman 'Full of surprises and jokes; comparisons with Dahl are, this time, justified' Sunday Times 'And you thought wizardry was for children. Harry Potter will make you think again. He casts his spells on grown-ups too' James Naughtie

The Harry Potter book series is superior to anything like it, This award winning book series is exactly what I expected from the fantastic reviews it was receiving but what I did not expect was the tremendous illustrations and artwork that was on the covers holding the pages together. Not only are these books amazing reading material but they also look superb on any shelf as a display peice. The words and pictures combined with the fantastic price (which is less than half the price of the RRP) is a spectacular pick up for any reading or Harry Potter fanatic.

Arrived in excellent time and was well packaged - it matched the product description and provided stock photos.

I am currently reading Latin and aiming for my Latin GCSE and although I found some of this book taxing, most of it was in my ability. Very enjoyable and worthy of five stars!

I thoroughly enjoyed making my way through this book and found it helped my vocabulary and skills a lot. The translation was enjoyable and humorous in parts. I also loved the original so this is a must for any Latin speaking, Harry Potter fans!

I recommended this book to many of my classmates who also enjoyed it immensely.

My 10 year old daughter started to read these in school but they were so popular with the other kids in her class it was taking ages to get the next book in the series. I bought her the box set so she didn't have to wait and she loves these books. My daughter spends 20 mins reading each night for school but until she started the Harry Potter books she never read anything in her free time. With these books she spends a lot of her free time reading which is great. She is now on the last book and I am wondering what series she can move onto next which will also capture her imagination. Great books in nice presentation box.

I've always been a fan of Harry Potter and hearing it being read by Stephen Fry gives it that added extra. Huge fan of both the book and the narrator, it's just the right combination.
If you don't have the time to read the books, listening to them is a definite must!

After years of living with his maternal Aunt, Uncle and cousin after the death of his parents Harry Potter receives a letter in the mail informing him that he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His Aunt and Uncle try everything they can to stop him going, for their own reasons. Harry was expecting a bit of wand waving and a few magic words.. what he wasn't expecting was to gain two best friends and have a rollercoaster of an adventure that would leave him face to face with the man who wants him dead.

This isn't the first time I've read Harry Potter. It's one of those books that fails to get old and you can read over and over again. It's not the best written book out there but it's more the way it's written that intrigues so many. The magic behind the magic.

The characters in this book are funny, courageous, fiercely loyal and very endearing. It's hard not to love them. My favourite is Professor Snape with his villainous charm but I think deep down he's a softy.

It's hard to believe that a book aimed at the younger audience would be able to capture and charm an adult while still being able to intrigue a child/adolescent but this book manages to do that. The story grips you almost from the very start and leaves you guessing. I still can't be able to figure out who's behind it all.

Bought these for my friend as his old HP books were falling to pieces, and he absolutely loves these.

The artwork is really lovely, and would make great prints for your wall I think. You have art on the back, front and spine of the book which is great. The 'Harry Potter' and title are done in shiny gold and really pops.

Slipcase has an image of Hogwarts looking out across the lake, which is pretty.

I'm very pleased and the item as a whole is excellent. Makes a great gift!

I bought this book for my son to read for world book day as he loved all the films and hes getting a lot better with his reading now (hes nearly 7). This book is really nice it is a good size for my son to carry around with him and been paperback its not too heavy for him and the text is a nice readable size for him. I think the price for this book is excellent and I would have expected it to cost more than it did. I am sure I will be back to purchase the next book in the series for him once hes completed reading this once. would recommend to others.

I bought these books after I watched the films so I did know sometimes what was going to happen next. Unlike the films, the books tell you a bit more about the spells and the overall storyline is slightly different in a good way. The books themselves are quite addictive to read once you get into one of them and it can be hard to put them down. I think they are well worth the money they cost because of their adventurous story and exciting tense parts.
