Darker. Deeper. Emotionally fraught and filled with musical brilliance.

Nicholas Hooper's score to `Harry Potter and the half-blood Prince' comprises some of the true gems of the music of the series. Fresh from composing the score to `Order of the Phoenix', Hooper was reunited again with director David Yates to score the sixth movie. Having received varying reviews on his previous score, Hooper seems to have taken this criticism to heart. Whereas `Order of the Phoenix's' score was more experimental - track listing did not follow a direct line of progression, overbearing and lengthy passages of minor moods and perhaps over-tensed phrases - the score to `Half-Blood Prince' follows a more direct line in terms of track listing, doesn't travel into overlong pieces and contains the most haunting piece of the entire series to date.

`Opening' is the aptly titled first piece in the score. Scored to the stunning first scene in the film, it contains an ethereal sounding choral melody that grows, played alongside the images of Michael Gambon's Dumbledore steering young Daniel Radcliffe's Potter away from wizarding paparazzi, following the events at the close of the last film. It is a minor introduction to the film, yet it is merely the first of two themes in the piece, the second theme rising as the clouds gather over muggle-London and the Death Eaters descend. As the Dark Mark appears in the sky, a drum beat, simple and pounding off the beat, enters, combined with runs in the strings as the dark wizards zoom through the air, which the camera follows at sickening angles, through the Leaky Cauldron into Diagon Alley. It is a doom-laden piece that captures the mood of a world that knows Lord Voldemort has not only returned, but is consolidating his hold over it.

I adore this gorgeous film score and I am in awe of what Mr Hooper has achieved here.

So many beautiful themes, often both subtle and delicate. So many different styles, from Celtic ballad to 1930's big band sound to choral works, from harp pieces, to those led by flute and those led by piano.

So many commentators damn the soundtrack with faint praise, it makes me wonder if it was written with just me in mind because I absolutely love it!

As a fan of Hooper's Order of the Phoenix score, I looked forward to hearing this soundtrack, both on it's own and with the movie. I can't honestly say that I was disappointed.

Hooper says of the CD that "[it] is to give you a feeling of the film through the medium of the music" - and, it has to be said, in this it mostly succeeds. The film, as with the book, has an underlying theme of darkness. In his score, Hooper creates a constant thread of melancholy through nearly every piece. Partly this is done by his use of the 'Possession' theme, created for Order of the Phoenix and partly with the new 'in noctem' theme. Even in some of the lighter pieces ('School!', 'Ginny' etc) the lightness is subtle - in each piece (barring the delightfully foot tapping 'Wizard Wheezes' and 'The Weasley Stomp') the underlying melancholy breaks through. So yes, the soundtrack does give one a feel of the movie through the medium of music. (Mostly dark and sad, with some bright moments - quite like the view of Diagon Alley.) Hooper also states that the tracks run in the order of the film; whilst this is true, it's not completely correct. Pieces from Order of the Phoenix have been used again in the film but have not been included in the album. Equally, 'Wizard Wheezes' does not have a place in the film.

The real downside to this soundtrack, to my mind, is that all the tracks are so short - and yet, so many flow almost seamlessly one into the next. In other words, possibly some of the pieces would have benefited from being combined together, at the expense of letting each significant moment or character have its own named piece.

If you enjoyed Hooper's Order of the Phoenix, or tracks such as William's 'A window to the past' (Prisoner of Azkaban), you will likely enjoy this subtle yet atmospheric soundtrack. (if not, try listening on a service such as spotify, and then download selectively!)

I'd never been too bothered about buying the Harry Potter soundtracks before. I have the books, I have the dvds, I thought, so why do I need the music aswell? But when I saw this movie, I just knew I had to buy the cd.
I've listened to it on repeat ever since I got it. It's got everything you could possibly want whilst still remaining true to the spirit of the books and films.
There's the fun and jaunty "Wizard Wheezes" "Living Death" and "School!", but also the hauntingly beautiful "Dumbledore's Farewell" "Harry and Hermione" "In Noctem" "Malfoy's Mission" and "Farewell Aragog", not forgetting the powerful and dramatic "Journey to the Cave" "Into the Rushes" and "Inferi in the Firestorm".

I cant think of a single track I dont like or that I'd skip over. My only criticism is that I wish some of the tracks were even longer.

Absolutely beautiful music composed by Nicholas Hooper, so dark and yet so moving. Personal favourite is Dumbledore's Farewell, so beautiful and so sad. Certain songs on the soundtrack such as; into the rushes, Dumbledore's speech, the killing of Dumbledore, the opening sequence and malfoy's mission really captures the feeling in the movie that the tension is mounting and the darkness is deeping, brilliant. Adore the music! Fantastic soundtrack!!
