Review

Praise for Harry the Poisonous Centipede "A real ground level story that rockets along on hundreds of legs!Bug fans will love this." Kidstuff School Books RTE Guide

From the Back Cover

'It's a Hoo-Min!' crackled George. 'Walking on its hairy-biter!'
But now it was Harry who felt brave. 'Come on! Let's peep at it!'
They crawled the rest of the way up the tunnel towards the light.

Harry is a poisonous centipede but he's not 'very' brave. Still, he 'is' the star of this 'seriously' squirmy story. Harry likes to eat things that wriggle and crackle, and things that are juicy and munchy! But there are some things that a poisonous centipede must 'never' try to eat – dangerous things like flying swoopers, belly wrigglers, furry biters and the most dangerous of all… 'Hoo-Mins'!

Harry and George's adventure up to the world of Hoo-Mins sparkles with fun and will be a delightfully squirmy experience for all young readers.

Harry is a friendly little centipede who lives with his mum, Belinda, and has a best friend George. They live in tunnels under the ground in a hot damp country and mustn't go to the no-top-world where the hoo-mins live because they are so dangerous. The book tells the story of Harry and George's first forays into the no-top-world and their adventures along a forbidden tunnel which to a dangerous underground chamber which is liable to flood. The story is fast-paced with some fun "centipedish" vocabulary thrown in like belly-crawler (snake) and the big-yellow-ball in the sky which the children love to work out. There are short chapters and appealing scattered line drawings so the story doesn't feel too heavy-going and the creepy-crawlies feel friendly and fun. It's perfect to read aloud to infant children or to be read alone by an older child - my son, 5, and daughter, 7 loved it. You never know, they may even pick up a little natural history along the way. A good book to read after the `Owl who was afraid of the dark', and if your child likes the funky phrases, try Donaldson: The Giant and the Joneses next.

This is the story about Harry who has lots of adventures. I really enjoyed this book and want to read other books by the same author. I love the bit where George gets spanked 42 times. I loved the story. I will give it top marks. Good work. Rupert aged 8.

One of the few books to hold the attention of a difficult Year 1 class i once taught. Now my own grandson is this age, I remembered the book, but was only able to order a used copy. However, the one i received shows little sign of wear, and my grandson loves it!
