Sold by a desperate debtor of a husband to a Yukon storekeeper notorious for his hardness of heart, Melissa Logan finds herself falling in love with her misunderstood new master, who is determined to resist her charms. Original.
From the Author
Harper's Bride, a story about the Klondike gold rush.
Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Klondike gold rush (although I didn't plan it that way) Harper's Bride is set against the backdrop of Dawson City, Yukon Territory, during history's last great stampede for gold.

Dylan feels sorry for the battered woman standing in front of him, and knows that if he refuses Coy Logan will just sell her to someone else.
Thus is a beautifully written story of two people from very different backgrounds who find themselves living together in close proximity, with neither one wanting to be in this situation. Melissa is a rather browbeaten character at the start of this story, having been ill treated by her family then her husband. She fears that Dylan will turn out to be the same sort of man who uses his fists when angry or drunk. Dylan has his own back story of betrayal by a woman who he loved and he thought loved him. So he keeps his distance from Melissa, he can see that she is afraid of him. But gradually they start to get along, Melissa learns that Dylan is not going to hurt her and for his part Dylan sees that here is a woman not happy to sit on her behind and let a man do everything. Their growing relationship was wonderful to read and so well written, as are the other characters. The Author's descriptive writing brings to life the town of Dawson and all of its inhabitants. Ms. Harrington has obviously done her research on this period in history. A fabulous read which I highly recommend.
This book was an enjoyable read and had me hooked from the first page! I read it in one sitting it was just that good!
Melissa has had a tough life raised by an abusive father and eventually abusive brothers, her mother works for a wealthy household and is only home one day a week. Melissa decided to marry one of her brother's friends Coy in hopes that she will be able to escape the torment and abuse. But sadly Coy is no different possibly even worse! Coy decided to join the Yukon Gold Rush and take Melissa and her newly born daughter Jenny to this harsh unforgiveable land. Coy runs up a large amount of debt with one of the local shop owners and in order to pay his debt of $1200.00 offers his wife and baby! Harper owns a shop in the area catering to the miners and fortune seekers, he wants a simple existence to earn enough money to return home to Oregon buy land and make his own way in life. He left Oregon several years previous after the love of his life marries his brother for the family wealth. He can see the bruises on Melissa and although he would rather the cash to settle the debt he can't allow Coy to end up selling her to someone else who may be even crueler so he agrees to take Melissa and Jenny in trade. He doesn't expect much from Melissa, cook, clean, and look after herself and Jenny! But, Melissa is much more ambitious than that and for once would like to be able to earn her own way so she is not reliant on anyone and can give baby Jenny a better life than she had! Harper and Melissa work side by side and the romance that develops between them is wonderful! I have a real soft spot for just how sweet Harper is with Jenny! But of course there is always the past that may interfere with their happiness..... Can Harper let go of the hurt caused by Elizabeth so he is able to let Melissa in? Can Melissa let go of the memories of abuse and trust Harper? What will happen when they return to Oregon?
Well worth a read and would recommend!
Will start on my next read from Alexis Harrington soon....
