This book is a follow on from 'The Midwife of Venice' which was unput-down-able. I enjoyed this one but not as much. The story didn't draw me in so completely and I didn't feel as if I was there experiencing it all with the characters, fearing for their lives the way I had done with M.o V. The ending seemed almost too 'neat' and I wasn't convinced that such mercy would really have been shown to the midwife. That said, it give interesting insights into life in the harem at that time and the narrative did crack along. Worth a read, but it's not a 5 star read.

I was so excited to hear there was a sequel to The midwife of Venice & I was not disappointed (in fact I thought this book was better than the first). An excellent read that I struggled to put down. Well written and highly emotive, with fascinating insight into harem life.
