This is a wonderful book for reminiscing if, like me, you were brought up near Hardwick. All of those seemingly unrelated childhood memories have been given a context and interconnections after reading this book. The author has done an extremely thorough job of researching the subject. The early days of farming, the later coming of the railways and the coal mines, and their effects on the economy of the area are all well covered. Also covered is how the importance of Hardwick waxed and waned due to the relative preferences for Chatsworth or Hardwick as a family home on the part of various members of the Cavendish family.
