Jean-Claude Van Damme and Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill Vo. I, Independence Day) star in this hard-hitting action film about justice and revenge. Van Damme stars as former Desert Storm special forces solider Phillip Sauvage. Sauvage is hired by a retired World Heavyweight champion turned wealthy entrepreneur, Wayne Barclay, to protect him and his family against a powerful rap music mogul and thug who has just been released from prison and is out to seek revenge against Barclay- the person that put him behind bars. To assist in the protection of the family, Sauvage sets up a team of young fighters and former soldiers who become "The Hard Corps."

So it's unfair to criticise a straight-to-dvd B-movie for its obvious drawbacks. There's only so much you can do with a limited budget.
The Hard Corps uses its limited resources to the full, as far as I can see. The role is a really good one for Van Damme; he's no spring chicken any more but this character and scenario gives him an opportunity to shine as the short-talking, kick-boxing action man.
The script clunks along to start with and the set up for the main characters isn't original -- but it gets you into the plot pretty quick, and the gunfire starts flying within 15 minutes. And hey; you're watching this to be entertained, right?
The action is based in urban American gangsta-rapper land, so you should expect a smattering of string bikinis and gold lame shorts (on the girls! Not Van Damme. Obviously), and plenty of mf-ing language. Plus heaps of semi-automatic gunfire and a stand up fight between Jean Claude and a boxer whose 15 years younger than him. Oh, and a pack of rottweilers eating a bad guy.
What's not to like?
He sets up a team called "The Hard Corps", complications arise when the boxer suspects that his sister may be in love with the bodyguard...
So Van Damme plays yet another damaged being who is hired to protect some people, but this this time, it's a little more street trhan anything he's done before.
Van Damme is as good as he always is, and Fox puts in a reasonable performance, it's just a shame that the film relies on stereotypical villains who walk with a swagger and hold their gun at a silly angle (Van Damme actually picks someone up on this).
Lettich directs the action at an adequate pace, and it's one of the better Direct to DVD efforts he has done, but then we have the silly romantic sub-plot that gets in the way of the narrative.
It's pretty pointless and adds no depth to the story, they could have left fox's character out and focus more on the Rap moguls character and fleshing his back story out more.
Not a bad effort, Van Damme fans will be pleased.
It's a good enough action thriller, but those who are expecting a "fairytale ending" of a film, look elsewhere - if The Hard Corps didn't get a big cinema release, then that doesn't really matter at all.
Just an average movie which has no need to shout it's presence in any way, shape or form - and all the cast and crew were probably aware of that.
