Product description

For Northern Ireland-originating rockers Therapy?, resilience and survival have become watchwords. Enduring over three decades as the musical, cultural and social landscapes have shifted around them, the trio have forged and retained a powerful and lasting connection with a dedicated fan base around the world, doing so by putting their emphasis on the music, solidifying a hard-won reputation as forward-thinking writers and a fierce live proposition in the process. As Therapy?'s fourth decade finally gets underway in earnest, sixteenth album 'Hard Cold Fire', written and pre-produced during an unprecedented time for music, is hefty, compact, and accessible, a distillation of everything that has made them what they are - hewn from County Antrim basalt, still possessed of their stoicism, but casting a renewed focus on catharsis and healing.

This has all the punch in just over half an hour that many bands strive for in a career. The hooks and riffs are all there, listen to Woe, Bewildered Herd, and Ugly and tell me I’m wrong. I think the lyrics poured over the sharp guitar and tight drum work make this an essential album in 2023. Do one.

Good album. Great production. Good tunes - short, sharp songs. Smash it out at 100 decibels for a 30 minute metal blast.

The album Troublegum was my introduction to Therapy? in 1994. Since then I acquired a few of their albums with some more or less commercially appealing to me. Hard Cold Fire is a good album that strikes a good balance between grunge, alternative rock and more melodic pop.

Hard Cold Fire is packed with heavy riffs, hooky vocal lines, frantic drumming, all combined with the unmistakable Therapy? twist that blends everything together. Andy's lyrics are as always on point, touching political and social subjects.

The production sounds modern and defined, seems it's a good thing they recorded the album in the new Marshall Records.

The real strength of the album is the songwriting, all ten songs are nothing short of amazing. I have already played Hard Cold Fire tens of times, and never skipped one song. It all flows smoothly and it's really hard not to press play again once the final notes of Days Kolaps come to an end.

Some complain about the length of the album... Well, Shortsharpshock was less than 10 mins long but that doesn't take anything away from its greatness.

All in all, Hard Cold Fire is a great album, one of the best of 2023. It's a grower, so give it a second chance if it didn't grab you by the first listen. In the end, it will definitely reward you.

I like Therapy? a lot, and this album needs a bit of time but once you get there it's flipping good; over the years they haven't compromised and that's a great thing. Also, try to see them live, they're fantastic.
(a tour later in 23 i think!) OK def 5 stars not 4!

If there's one thing you can always count on in the rock world - its that Therapy? can always be relied upon to deliver a, at best decent album, at worst, an interesting one.
This is the longest time T? have ever spent between albums, (Cleave was over 4 years ago) so you would expect the extra time to be spent coming up with something special. Except Therapy? are the masters of confounding our expectations and these songs clatter along like the sound of 3 men in a rehearsal room doing what they do best - making noisy, dark-hearted punk rock songs. So there's no sonic experimentation here but hey, expecting Therapy? to 'do an AC/DC' and make the same album again was never going to be an option.
So the songs then - opener 'They Shoot the Terrible Master' reminded me a lot of something from the NANE album - its short, heavy, unrefined and sonically dense. Andy Cairns' twisted lyrics and simple melody holding the hold the whole thing together and its over in under 3 minutes so we're off to a great start. Neil Cooper's propulsive drumming once again hurtle the songs along as the album picks up but anyone expecting epic songwriting (a la Crooked Timber) this time around is going to be sorely disappointed. The album has a very short running time and all songs come in at under 3 and a half minutes so the aforementioned opener stands as the blueprint for the whole record. Is that a bad thing though?
Therapy? often say that a 'shortsharpshock' with songs is the best way to go and they try to prove it here. 'Joy' and 'Bewildered Herd' have great riffs and choruses as does recent single 'Poundland of Hope and Glory' despite its awful title. Favourites so far for me would be '2 Wounded Animals' and 'Bewildered Herd' - more clattering punk angst that never outstay their welcome but have just enough time to burrow into your head before they're gone.
Is it a return to glory days? is the question everyone will be asking and if by that you mean, 'does it sound like Troublegum?' then the answer is a clear and definite , 'No'.
But if an exciting chunk of modern heaviness is your thing then this album is well worth a go.
