A collection of three short stories featuring London PI Ryan Kyd, who has taken up his trade after a sports injury forced retirement from the Metropolitan Police Diplomatic Protection Group.

Ryan uses previous Police contacts to get up-to-date info and intelligence about the shady personalities he is thrown against during his investigations. He also has contacts within the villainous realm of London's underworld - some who help, some who hinder, and some who just attempt to manipulate him towards their own benefit!

Although a reasonably clever guy, who generally gets a 'result' in the end, Ryan is not blessed with good luck - rather he is cursed by lack of it, and investigations never run to plan. He seems to be an English version of Jim Rockford.

In a series of mishaps, reminiscent of those that befall Arthur Daley and Terry in the TV series 'Minder', Ryan struggles to keep things on an even keel as good leads become blind alleys and people he thinks he can trust turn out to be villains.

While not (and probably not intended to be) gripping thrillers that challenge the reader's mind, these short stories are nevertheless entertaining and a good light read. Each story improves on the previous one, and when sufficient have been published they could make an excellent foundation for a light-hearted TV series - sort of 'Minder' meets 'Boon'.

The three stories (the 1st, 2nd and 4th in the series) are 'Business Is Murder', 'Hand Of Darkness' and 'The Dead Of Winter' ; They are available as separate volumes but are better value in this compendium edition. (See my individual reviews posted for these titles.)

‘Hard Cases’ is an excellent omnibus publication that is both entertaining and darkly thought provoking. The three noirish Ryan Kyd mysteries go from strength to strength as the reader can trace both the development of the central character and the increasingly complex themes.

All three tales demonstrate the author's trade marks: the fast paced narratives; the sharp and witty characterisation; the moral ambiguities; the crackling dialogue; the comic use of similes and the constant ability to surprise.

Throughout the collection Ryan Kyd, a so-called ‘hard boiled’ private detective displays the cynicism of the disappointed idealist yet we never lose sight of his underlying humanity and warmth. Roger Hurn has created a potential Marlowe or Hammer for London in the 21st century. Furthermore, he does not shy away from some fascinating moral ambiguities but confronts them with honesty; this is not comfortable 'Sunday evening slipper' detective fiction but gritty and realistic writing that asks some tough questions.

‘Business is Murder’ does a great job of establishing both the central protagonist and the London setting. The first person narrative enables the reader to get to know Ryan’s inner thoughts and gives the story an immediacy. A missing person case plunges Ryan into a world of shady business dealings, kidnapping and murder.

‘The Hand of Darkness’ is a fast paced, exciting thriller in which the hard boiled London private detective investigates a cult. As the conspiracy deepens he peels away the facade and penetrates corruption at the highest echelons of the political world.

This omnibus edition contained three Ryan Kyd novels, a down at heel private eye, who seems to get himself into rather a lot of scrapes. Easy to read, amusing at times and keeps your attention, nothing more.

HASH(0x96ccb2b8) out of 5 stars Modern twist of P.I. of the old style 18 Jun. 2016

Enjoyed this collection of cases, they give a new twist to the pulp P.I. fiction of the past. The storyline had a twist and they surprised at the end. It is a modern P.I. but very much written in the vein of a softer Chandler. I found the book hard to put down and I think others will also. This book was provided for me in return for an honest review.
