Product description

Product Description

An estimated 135, 000 people jammed Central Park's Sheep Meadow for Barbra Streisand's free solo concert in 1968. Six television cameras and a film camera mounted on a helicopter recorded the concert and the audience from every concievable angle.

From Amazon.co.uk

Barbra Streisand's fourth and best television special, A Happening in Central Park (September 15, 1968) is refreshingly free of gimmicks and concepts. It's just Streisand with an orchestra in front of a live New York audience. "The Nearness of You," "Cry Me a River," "I Can See It," "Second Hand Rose" (the audience enjoys singing along)," "People," and "Happy Days Are Here Again." --David Horiuchi

A terrific concert by Barbra, I've been a fan since first hearing her on radio in this country in the sixties, a beautiful pure voice without the warbling brilliant!

Live in Central Park, 1968 in front of 135,000 people at the age of 25 - remarkable. What is so electrifying is that the concert sounds like a nightclub act - which is a positive thing considering the intimacy and warmth in Streisand's voice. Also worth noting are the songs that don't appear as studio versions on other Streisand albums. This is the ultimate live recording - very recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Will Happen To You!! 1 Jun. 2013

This CD A Happening in Central Park is one of my favorite Barbara Streisand Albums. I was given it as a gift in 1968 which was a vinyl back then but as time went on you began to hear the cracks and bumps so it was time to get the CD which brought back the clarity. A Happening in Central Park was made after Barbara Streisand made Funny Girl it's amazing this concert was made in Central Park on a perfect night with no rain and no violence. The songs are great with a live audience that gives back their hart warming feed back. I also have the DVD to this CD which is great to have so you can see and hear the concert. You'll enjoy it I promise.
4.0 out of 5 stars As a live, one-time event....... 25 Feb. 2013

As a live, unique, one-time event this is excellent. I listened and thrilled to the LP back in LP days. I took a recording workshop with Phil Ramone who referred to the special technical difficulties presented by the weather and cables being cut, etc. SO, I was eager to see the end result. By today's standards, the quality is mediocre. But the opening and closing shots (from a helicopter and a long pull-out from a dolly through the audience) were remarkable.... to be done with those huge color cameras of the period. Occasionally the camera is visible. What a huge audience. We see the police requiring people to sit down (in the mud??). Technically, a little rough by today's standards, Bab's gowns are simple but fabulously appropriate. What a performer! She must have appeared just a tiny speck to most of the huge audience. Saw the 2013 Oscars last night. Technically, it was remarkable: body microphones galore and video links all oncue. And the orchestra at a studio in the Capitol Records Tower some blocks away. It was a technical marvel. Nothing miraculous technically here, but a very acceptable representation of a miraculous, one-time, and totally unique event.
