RULES: Each player gets a phantom of his player color. When placing a follower on a tile, the player may also place his phantom as an additional follower on the same tile. When both the follower and the phantom occupy the same tile, they must be placed on two different features. When the player gets his phantom back from scoring, he may keep it to use in a later turn. The phantom can also be placed by itself, and always counts as a regular follower.

The Phantom expansion is small and it is useful in some moves when there are 2 potentially lucrative positions to place a meeple, and can shift the balance of power of in game when large features are in dispute. A good addition.

Fun little addition to an already fun game. Had to look up the instructions online, as unfortunately my talents don't stretch to reading German but that didn't take too long. Recommended!

Fantastic! An existing Carcassone expansion which can be used with the 2nd edition Carcassone base game... without worrying about the art work!
Adds a great mechanic to the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars How can anyone play Carcassonne without this expansion. 27 Oct. 2014
By Matt Rich - Published on Amazon.com

This little expansion is getting harder and harder to find. If you are a Carcassonne fan, I highly recommend this game add-on and we think it is a must have. Some people question what expansion they should get first, and due to the relative lack of availability of this item, I feel that this should be the first thing to be acquired. Majority of the other expansions can be had in one version or another.

The rules in this expansion were in German (as my items shipped from Germany). That's okay with me, I already knew how to play with this expansion.

Essentially, These are the translucent followers that came in the special edition set a few years ago. One difference, the 6th meeple (not shown in the product photo) is a clear purple follower (for the Grey set, to distinguish between black and grey is easier with the purple follower).

This mini-expansion allows you to place a normal follower (meeple, builder, pig, etc.) during the "move the wood phase" but after the normal follower is placed, you can place a phantom (clear follower) to another unoccupied feature on the tile you just played (or to any other feature that you could legally play a follower in your turn). Do note, that the phantom always plays last. You can play the phantom if he is your only follower, as he is a follower. However, you cannot play the phantom, on a tile and then follow it with a builder. If you wanted the builder on a tile that the phantom is on, the earliest you could do that would be the following turn.

The way we typically play, we hold the phantom in reserve. Then when a tile is played that will close one feature while extending another feature, we play a normal follower on the feature to be extended while using the phantom for claiming the "quick points" of the small closed city or 2 segment road, and then we get the phantom follower back to be used in subsequent turns.

We own the Rio Grande Games version of this where we just stumbled across it at a local gaming store. We picked up another couple sets here as gifts for our gaming friends. One thing they all ask for when we come to play games is to bring our phantoms because playing without them just isn't the same. When you play without them, you are constantly hesitating on if you should take the sure 4 points of a small closed city or should you place your meeple on a city that could grow to become 40 points. No longer do you have to choose, you can have both with this handy expansion.

Be aware of some people selling this "expansion" on other sites without the original plastic meeple box or with only 5 colors. That is not the expansion, that is just someone who purchased the special edition box and split up the meeples and are selling them as a 5 player expansion of "The Phantom". This is not the case here, this Hans im Glück set is the original and comes with all 6 followers. Get your set before they are gone for good.
4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful little addition 28 April 2015

Came in great condition -- I love this addition to the game. It's true that it could be replaced with a few extra meeples (designated "phantoms" with something as simple as a sharpie dot) and a print out of the rules from board game geek. However, I think the phantoms and case are beautiful and, to me, it was worth $15 to have them.
