As these short stories become more and more common on Amazon, the author needs to more and more think about what it is they are trying to do with the story.
How linked is it to the main plot? is it to tease the existing fans? is it to lead new fans in to the series? or all of these?
Hannibal the patrol is a splendid insight into Mutt, as Hanno's number two, the reader wants to know more, but the main books don't have space to dig into the past of everyone.
This tale gives room for Mutt to show his temperament, his skills and why he follows Hanno. To bring out this tale is a fantastic meeting with the local Celts, their colour and verve really add to the story, and help bring out the characters.
Ben's writing as usual is superb, he brings life to everyone and everything he writes.
This is a wonderful teaser on trailer for the series, and also gives the first chapter of the next book "Fields of Blood"

This all action story hits the ground running and from page one you are into the thick of it,as Hanno and Mutt patrol are pitch into hand to hand combat ,first against the Cenomani and later on the Romans . This is Ben Kane at his joyful best and really sets us up for the return of Hanno in Fields of Blood later this year. A great little story and a excellent read.

This short story fits the other books in this Ben Kane series nicely; you could read the previous and next books in the series without reading this one, but by reading this it adds much more rich detail to the overall story and fills the large gap of time between the previous and next books which links them together in a much more detailed way. This story follows Hanno and Mutt two of Hannibal's soldiers and officers who command a Cathaginian patrol which is moving through a thick woodland in Gaul, and have enemies on all sides; can they survive long enough to get to the nearest town and get some much needed supplies.

Anything from Ben Kane is welcome and this is a short little reminder of his talents while we wait for the next full novel. This is a story that features Mutt and Hanno, although Hanno is slightly peripheral. Set around a skirmish with some Gauls and then an encounter with some friendly Gauls, this is really a character insight to Mutt as he gets to know Hanno and starts forming a relationship.
I am a big fan of the author's books and while I enjoyed this one, it ended slightly strangely and abruptly and I wanted more of a satisfying conclusion.

This is a seriously short interlude in Ben Kane's Hannibal series (currently 4 books) so I strongly recommend you read all the books in chronological order, in which case you might forgive Ben for writing (and so charging us for) such an unsatisfying episode. Having read all of Mr. Kane's Hannibal series, and trusting that there is more to come, I can tell you that the entire series makes compelling reading and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Ben Kane is an excellent author and this short story is good; not least for introducing a great new character in Mutt. However, it loses a star for being unfinished. It ends on a cliff-hanger, which is then left unresolved in the subsequent novel (only a few clues) which is a pity.
