Josh is friends with the McAllister brothers and Mea, through a chance encounter with Josh while finding her feet at college ends up sharing with the Chandler twins.
This was just the beginning of a beautiful friendship between the two of them, one that had not just the legs but the heart to morph into so much more.
Mea was in college for two reasons, to further her education as you would expect but it also gave her the perfect opportunity to get out from under a mother that can only ever be described as reprehensible. A chance to forge her own path and start afresh was just what she needed, but would it stay that way?
Josh was a real sweetheart, he adores Mea and isn’t shy about letting her know that his life revolves around her, he was totally swoon worthy.
Yes, it filled in some of the gaps from the first book but please don’t think that, that is all it did, because while it has been said that the book acts as almost a prequel to Adjournment, I think I found it more than able to support not only the characters from that novel but also Josh and Mea, this pair were worthy of their own story but I think there are bits that the author cleverly has kept to herself.
That being said, I loved the story of Mea and Josh. I could not put it down. This is a true story of second chances, and one that makes many of us wish we’d had a second chance to change the outcome at some point in our life.
Josh is a character that the author has done a phenomenal job of creating. He’s honest, trustworthy and you just want to see him happy in the end. Throw in that he’s the grounding force with the McAllister triplets--- yes, from Adjournment, and it makes for a great reading experience.
Mea escapes her horrible life and ends up living with none other than Molly and Morgan Chandler, twin sisters to Sidney from Adjournment. Molly is the one in need of a new life and she finds that at the hands of new friends and finds love (if she will allow her walls to be broken down) in Josh.
This installment does not disappoint. Over and over again I found myself laughing and not concerned with steamy romance I’ve seen in so many other novels.
Emersyn Vallis has done a great job and shown tremendous growth in following up that first book with this edition. I have books #3 and #4 and am excited to delve right into those.

When reading Adjournment I enjoyed Mea's character and wondered more about her story so it was great to read Hanging Pawns and learn Mea and Josh's story.
There are some fantastic moments, I love Morgan and Molly! They always put a smile on my face as I read with nervous anticipation, waiting on their next devious plan.
That being said, I felt this story was a little rushed, there seemed to be a big build up in Josh and Mea's relationship and I was waiting for the explosion between them, but instead it was more of a fizzle. The ending seemed rushed and I would of liked to have read more of Josh and Mea as a couple than as friends, I was also hoping for a scene between Mea and her mother, so I could feel more connected with Mea and her painful past.
I was thrilled to read a little of Simon without Sidney, there is definitely more to the story there and I can't wait to find out more!
“I’ve never heard a man speak that way to a woman. Well, not to one like her. I thought men flocked to women like her, falling at their feet in hopes of getting a peek up the whore’s skirt.”
“This isn’t a car, this is scrap metal held together with wire and chewing gum.”
“Everyone has a story to tell, they just need to find the right person to tell it to.”
“Because when I looked at you, I saw my entire world and it was as though someone turned on a light switch. I just wanted to be the one to turn yours on.”
“I have loved you since I tricked you into letting me ahead of you in line, and I will love you until I can trick you into letting me die first, because I don’t want to live a second without you.”
“Morgan, my love. When you marry me it will because you asked me… or because you were medicated,”
This is one of those special and happy occasions when the sequel outshines the debut. I am thrilled to report that Book 2 Hanging Pawns, is a vast improvement in the readability and quality of Ms. Vallis’s writing. The characters are far more likable, witty, and interesting as we are not seeing them through Sidney’s untrusting filter, but through Mea’s. I adore Mea and Josh as a couple, and also relished the dynamic between the other two couples. The mystery and intrigue continues to deepen Hanging Pawns with more clues and secrets being exposed. I couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed the clever dialog, bickering, and humorous banter, as well as all the twists and intersecting and overlapping of life spaces, and look forward to unraveling more surprises in the 2 remaining hefty tomes.
