Tried using them against my palm but that interfered with the bike controls and gripping the handle bars.
Solution? Buy a pair of mittens. Oh! Utter bliss! The pouch sits right at my fingers and keeps them toasty, you wouldn't know it was minus temperatures. Ah, takes me 40 minutes to cycle into work. No more agony.
Here's a tip. If you've only used them for an hour or so then pop them into an airtight bag and the reaction will stop. Take them out again to use them again. I get a ride in to work and ride a ride back on one pair. Trying to do that overnight didn't seem to work but my baggy at home may not have been truly airtight. Might try wrapping in foil overnight and see if I can squeeze another day out of them. Shame to waste them.
Edit: Using them 2 hours a day in one hour chunks and putting them in an airtight bag when not using them I've managed to make each pair last for three days of cycle commuting.
When they do start to cool down a bit, just really agitate them with your hands and mix the insides together. This will give them a new lease of life and they become toasty hot again!
I also sometimes (if walking in ice/snow/cold winds) put them around my phone - especially when using GPS as they tend to keep the phone warmer and you mitigate cold weather battery problems.
Cheap enough to put a pack in your glove box and ruck sack and forget about them. Won't change your life, but definitely makes some situations more tolerable!
I bought these on the off chance and they are great.
Just a few minutes exposure to the air and they start to warm up, I stick one inside my glove and it soon warms my hand up. They do get quite hot after a while but not too hot to hold and stay warm for up to 10 hours.
If you don't need constant heat they can be kept inside a pocket and you can warm your hands as and when.
A great idea and I'll be buying more of these.
I was a skeptic when purchasing these after reading about them online. I thought they might be luke warm for a few hours. So after using them for about a week I have to say that I'm very impressed. I pop one in each glove and they really do last 10+ hours. As for the temperature, they are as good as a hot water bottle or holding a cup of tea.
Now that I view them as a must have, I'm going to try some of the tips about bagging them up to get multiple uses per pair as this could otherwise become rather pricey.
Would recommend to anyone who feels the cold, they're awesome.
