The Wild hybrid brings versatility and quality together in one neat package. The Handpresso Wild Hybrid is simple, light, elegant and compact. Take it absolutely anywhere: the office, on holiday, weekends away, or while trekking or travelling. Generate 16-bar pressure with the hand pump, add hot water (from a kettle or a thermo flask), espresso coffee (ground coffee or E.S.E. pods), and prepare high quality espresso with the push of a button! I was worried that the pumping would be a chore - all the videos I could find skipped that part of the preparation. However, although about 30 strokes are needed for each shot the length of each stroke is short and there is little resistance so this takes just 10 seconds or so and very little effort.
The basket is a touch fiddly to fill and requires a little practice, and the puck of coffee doesn't always pop out with the touch of a finger (especially if the coffee is tamped down hard). However, these are very small complaints in the absence of anything more serious.
I've been using loose coffee many times a day for about a week and am very pleased with the results I've been getting. Good espresso with a surprisingly large amount of crema. I am not a coffee connoisseur, but online reviews written by people who know their coffee have been overwhelmingly positive also. There is no question that this is a significant step up from the Moka pot that I was using - the coffee is far better and much faster to prepare.
I've no regrets about purchasing this and would wholeheartedly recommend it.
There was one issue with my unit which was that the rubberised coating started to flake off the portafilter (i.e. the screw-on cap) after a couple of uses. I am therefore returning it for a replacement. I've read many reviews and haven't heard of this fault elsewhere, and the manufacturers seemed surprised to hear about it, so I am assuming it is a one-off.
EDIT: I've now returned the replacement for yet another replacement: after less than a week's use it started to leak air after being pressurised, to the extent that I was having to rush to prepare shots before the pressure was too low. This didn't happen with the first unit.
This *does* make good coffee, so I'm not ready to cut my losses yet. However, the fact I've now on my third unit suggests that the quality assurance is not great - which isn't good enough when you consider the cost. For that reason I've reduced the number of stars from 5 to 3.
As a final note, do yourself an enormous favour and buy one of the Chinese aluminium funnel and tamper sets you'll find on eBay. These are overpriced, but well worth it to avoid sweeping up coffee every time you fill the basket.
EDIT 2: Just an additional note to say that after much use the 2nd replacement is still working fine, which is a big relief as I would have been embarrassed to have returned this three times! I have no regrets about buying this and I use it perhaps 4-5 times every day. My advice, however, would be to make sure to use yours often for at least the first few days after buying it, so that any problems should show themselves early.
