Product description

Review

It's lovely to see a book that teaches such a traditional skill - and it's so clearly laid out, with easy to follow instructions and excellent illustrations, ideal for someone starting from scratch. -- Craftsman Magazine March 1 2008

Top Customer Reviews

If you want to learn about bookbinding so that you can make books yourself, don't buy this book. Buy one by Shereen LaPlantz or Alisa Golden. This book is a strange mixture of techniques, projects and ideas, with none explained clearly enough for a beginner nor inspirational enough for someone who knows what they are doing. It has some of the dullest examples I've seen in a while. And surely they could have run to having the text checked over by a native English speaker? They constantly confuse depth and width. If you are making a box, it will have depth, width and length. If you refer only to length and depth, you will get the reader horribly confused!
There are much better books out there.

This book is simply awful. I wish I'd read the review before picking up a copy at my local Waterstones. The instructions are muddled, misleading, and sometimes missing. Even the basics are badly covered. AVOID!

I bought this book having borrowed it from the library for several weeks. It is probably too hard to understand if you are a complete beginner but after having done beginners' book-binding and box-making courses I find it a useful reference book. It begins with a section on how to do various parts of book binding / box making. It then follows with a good selection of projects. If you're interested in box making as well as book binding I would recommend it.

I have several books on hand binding. What I like about this one, is that it includes some different things: travel journal, bradel binding, portfolio and a range of paper decorating techniques.
