FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE. Soloists and orchestra and chorus are all superb. It's the 1752 version (only authentic version for conventional SATB soloists), available also as an audio CD on Brilliant Classics 2CD set. But the visuals are very beautiful in this video production including insertions of Rembrandt etchings and paintings appropriate to the immediate content of the singing. Buy both the video and the CD's the price is low enough.

Excellent quality of vision and surround sound. The conductor keeps the tempo as it should be for this type of music. Knows his stuff. Excellent singers, solo and in the choir :-)

This DVD sat on my shelves for ages without being played. But when at last I did so, I was thrilled by the quality of this live 1994 recording in Pieterskerk in Leiden. And this despite the fact that it's not quite the style of Messiah that I normally prefer. All four soloits are really outstanding, and the whole performance is serious, and at times intense. I cannot recommend this performance too highly.

Incidentally, the Argo CD released at about the same time is by exactly the same team, but that was recorded a year earlier in Kings College Cambridge rather than the Netherlands.

I was quite confused looking at all the different versions & the comments people had made, some say it's great the next comments says it's poor? I took a chance with this version & found it quite enjoyable! I had seen the performance live at Liverpool Cathedral & this "supported" what my wife & I had heard & seen, it evoked the memories & the emotions that this classical work were designed to do & ultimately give glory to our creator. For me this certainly ticked the box. I don't doubt that there are copies that have better sound reproduction or video quality or more superlative performances, but for me the joy on the faces of those in leading roles and the conductor has to be worth something too!

An excellent interpretation by a superb choir, soloists and orchestra of this majestic work by Handel so different to the more usual renditions by large choirs and orchestras.

Having enjoyed the original Decca/L'Oiseau-Lyre recording with the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, for years, I looked forward to receive the DVD-version. Unfortunately this is not an exact video version of the original Oxford session, but a later recording at Westminster. The sound mixing is of very poor quality. The soloists are overwhelmed by the orchestra and therefore the unique colour of each of the excellent singers are rarely recognizable.
