...don't play this at a wedding. Commissioned from Handel and librettist Nicola Giuvo as a wedding serenata in 1708 by Aurora Sanseverino the aunt of the bride Princess Beatrice Tocco di Montemiletto, and reused for Sanseverino's son's wedding in 1711, it's not entirely clear why such a love story with a tragic result (Giuvo apparently was working with a plan for a series of works whose subjects involved such ill-fated couples from Ovid's Metamorposes) would have been considered appropriate for the occasion. The accompanying booklet speculates that it may have been related to a superstition rooted in Neapolitan culture of warding off the evil eye with appropriate "reverse rituals". To demonstrate just how successful this was, both grooms, Tolomeo Saverio Gallio Duke of Alvito and Count Pasquale d'Alife, died not long after their respective weddings.

I've been in possession of a recording of this variant of Handel's composition (which was reworked and enlarged in 1732 and the story used for an English language one act masque in 1718 and then as a two act composition of 1739) from Emmanuelle Haim for some while, which is rather good in itself, but the temptation to get hold of Fabio Bonnizzoni's new release was too great, as everything he has done on these Glossa label releases has been superb. This is no exception, and once again we have top notch soprano Roberta Invernizzi (Aci), alongside two performers new to Bonnizzoni's discs, mezzo Blandine Staskiewicz (Galatea) and bass Lisandro Abadie (Polifemo), who stand comparison favourably alongside Invernizzi. The recorded sound is warm and resonant, and the booklet supplies some interesting notes with full libretto and translations (English/French/German). A recommended set, as with all in this series.

The recording is beautifully sung with great musicality and attention to detail. Sometimes the recording lacks definition and the sound is indistinct.

A rather unusual CD, but it was in stock as a very good price, and delivery was prompt, and since it was for a Christmas present, I was relieved of the anxiety of whether I could get in time. All good.
