Watching the pieces performed by this orchestra on the BBC Proms this year, I was enthralled by the sound from the period instruments and the entusiasm of the conductor. Herve Niquet has obviously spent a large amount of time researching the music and how it would have sounded when originally written. The result is a recording of Handel's music that is different and, in my opinion, superior to versions played on more modern instruments. Certainly the best version of the Water Music and Royal Fireworks that I have heard.

Heard this conductor and orchestra on the BBC Proms.

Water and Firework music all played on original 18th C instruments, and conducted by Herve Niquel with panache and style by the bucket load.

A great price and an enormous pleasure to listen to.

Amazing. I first saw/heard Herve Niquet and this orchestra on the BBC proms on Youtube. At first I was skeptical. What's a Frenchman doing directing Handel? How will that come out? The proms recording at the Royal Albert hall on Youtube was good but, the acoustics, plus the crowd noise was not the best. I like to sample on Youtube and then buy the CD. I thought to myself, I bet in a proper studio/recording setting, they'll sound even better. Sure enough, I found this recording and it is magnificent. The musicians play on period instruments and this gives a surreal timbre and fabric to the works that are missing with today's overly bright, almost artificial-sounding, modern instruments. Listening to them play, you feel a rush of raw excitement and reckless abandonment. To me, this must be just how these pieces sounded when they were originally played. Just fantastic! You won't be disappointed.

This is a hugely enjoyable disc. The Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks are among Handel's most enduringly popular works and it is easy to see why: they are full of melody, harmonic ingenuity and grace and have given pleasure to many, many people for nearly three centuries now. As a result any new recording needs something rather special to offer if it is to compete with the many excellent versions already available. This most certainly does.

Hervé Niquet has assembled colossal forces here and as both these works were written for outdoor performance in a far from silent context, this makes excellent historical sense. Even so, the sheer scale is breathtaking as the sound of literally dozens of woodwind and valveless baroque brass instruments dwarf a sizeable string section. It is a thrilling sound, beautifully controlled by Niquet, whose use of dynamics (and some terrific percussion) really makes the music glow.

Of course with so many period instruments the sound can be a little rough at times and you certainly wouldn't look to this disc for analysis of individual lines, but that isn't its aim. It produces a magnificent eighteenth century Wall Of Sound - excellently recorded by Glossa - and a terrific new take on very well-known music. With excellent notes and attractive packaging, this is a cracking disc all round and very warmly recommended.
