The only thing you'll miss if you use a black & white printer is one double A4 sized map inside which is part of the book and just shows what the eventual phase 1 map of a certain area would look like - that and the colour coded boxes at the back - which have the colour written next to them anyway - you do know what red, yellow, green, etc look like from the printed word don't you ?
Having sad that if you have the money to spare and you are going to be doing a phase 1 training course or are just starting out in doing phase 1 surveys then yes go ahead and buy it - but remember the JNCC website for future reference (and copies) as using this out in the field continually will soon ruin it - one little tip - if you download from JNCC print in A5 that way you have a handy sized copy for carrying about in the field with all the detail and text still clearly readable.
You could always just print out the second half of the book from the internet, as some people on the course had done. In the unfavourable weather conditions during our course though, I think it was much more practical to have the book - a bit more durable than printed sheets.
I needed a suitable reference book that could help improve my knowledge.
This book was easy to follow and had enough technical detail to be worthwhile
