I got this book 2 years ago when my hamster had an unexpected litter. Since then I have found myself referring back to it time and time again. It contains very detailed, but straighforward help on choosing a hamster, and caring for it, the anatomy of the hamster, A-Z of hamster diseases, breeding, and showing them. There are also beautiful photos of hamsters. I have 17 years of hamster experience, and still found this book to contain things I didn't know about hamsters. I would recommend this book to any hamster owner, no matter what experience you have. A truly brilliant book.

I have 6 hamsters. 2 of them are Syrians and the other 4 are Campbells Russian dwarf hamsters. I wish I owned this book in May 2005 when 2 of my hamsters had unexpected litters. This book is really useful. I only got it today and I can tell that is going to be really handy if I ever have any problems with my hamsters. It helps you find out what breed your hamsters is. It even has information about how to catch you hamster if it escapes! Even if you only have 1 hamster I would advise you to get this book. I love it! It has lots of good information and quite a lot of cute pictures too!

I have three Syrian hamsters and after already purchasing six various books on Hamsters I saw this one and decided to give it a go. WOW, I wish I'd known about this book a long time ago, it's full of all the information you would ever need on Hamsters, and I found the info I wanted most of all which was what you can do if your hamsters babies need hand rearing for any reason as my hamster's babies twice had all died at various times up to 13 days old so I wanted to know if there was anything I could do to rear them myself. Touch wood my hamster's 3rd pregnancy so far has been OK and the babies are one week old today (15/3/13) and none so far have been lost but I've noticed a much smaller weaker baby which on the advice of this book I will remove from the nest while mum is occupied elsewhere and offer a little extra food before carefully placing the baby back in the nest without mum seeing (remember not to touch the babies with hands)I found myself getting really engrossed in this book and reading up on many things to do with hamster care/health etc in the easy to read sections. There's an A-Z of hamster diseases as well as great advice and info on breeding the various types of hamsters so the information is specific to your breed of hamster. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about hamsters in greater detail! The photographs in this book are also great and there are plenty of them too! There are also some diagrams of the inside of the hamster's body.
A brilliant book which would have been the ONLY hamster book I'd bought had it been the first! (and not aimed at just children)

I'm delighted with my purchase.

Great market place seller, sent quickly and book was as described if not better, it actually looks like new!

I would recommend this book to those who are just starting out in the world of hamster-keeping, and those who are old hands at it alike. It was a Christmas present, specially requested by my 27yr old daughter who has kept hamsters for several years, and she finds it very useful. It's great to be able to look inside before you buy too.

I wanted to find a reference book about hamsters which wasn't aimed at very young children, and this book is specifically written for adults which is a nice change!

It is a proper reference guide, and is packed full of information. It is very detailed, and has very specific information about health care, breeding, care, nutrition, and is one of the only books with detailed information for anyone wishing to show their hamsters.

The book does not have as many pictures as other hamster guides, but to be honest there is so much written information in here that it doesn't need them. It is a guide which will stay happily on your bookshelf, and you will refer back to it again and again as the need arises. You can really tell that the authors know exactly what they are talking about, and it is a huge positive that the authors have got a qualified vet to write the section on health care, so that the you have detailed, professional advice.

If you have dwarf hamsters, the book covers all the different breeds, although it does tend to focus slightly more on Syrian hamsters. So it might be worth you looking at Dwarf Hamsters (Pet Owner's Manuals) which compliments the Hamsterlopaedia by concentraing solely on dwarf hamsters, and I would recommend that both are extremely useful.

I saw a recommendation for this book on a hamster website so I thought it'd be worth reading and I am pleased to say that it was well worth the read. Unlike some other hamster books that I have seen in the past, this one is more geared at adults with chapters on breeding and exhibiting hamsters as well as a chapter which outlines the hamster's organ structures. I've been keeping hamsters as pets for several years and there was still so much that I have learnt from reading this book.
There aren't a great deal of photos in the book but if you're looking for information and facts then this book is definitely for you. Like a lot of hamster books, it tends to focus more on the Syrian Hamster but there's still a great deal of information for those interested in keeping dwarf hamsters too.
Very highly recommended.
