Hammer of God – Philip McCormac

This is not my first foray into the writings of Philip McCormac but it is a first for me into the Western genre.

The author has managed to paint a picture of a very driven individual.
From the start of the book you are introduced to a young, but very experienced lawman, Deputy Joe Hammer.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and felt each of the characters introduced to us throughout the book were real and help create this picture of the ‘Wild West’. The story does keep you guessing what’s going to happen next in the life of this deputy?
As this is a western there is a certain amount of violence and bloodshed detailed in the book but is appropriate.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read, even if they haven’t read a western novel before!

An enjoyable read.

I recently read McCormac’s ‘Brother in Arms’ so I thought I’d give another one of his books a go. I wasn’t disappointed. The story, which centres around the lawman Joe Hammer, can at times be pretty violent and others downright brutal – but what else would you want from a story in the good Old West. I must admit I have a bit of a guilty pleasure for Westerns – and this book certainly sated that desire.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer kills for God 26 May 2015

There are good people and there are bad people. When the bad people kill the good people, Joe Hammer, an on-again, off-again priest, steps in and kills the bad people on behalf of the good people - and God. Therein lies the general plot of the story. It keeps moving along at a good clip with interesting people. The killings are many and violent. Lots of action earned my attention to the gritty end - and a 4 star rating.

Can a man quit being a tough lawman and train to become a priest? Events happen which cause him to return to being a man hunter. A tough, bloody Western. I will be reading more of this author's novels.

This an action packed and well written Western. I believe it is well worth at least three stars and I believe fans of classic style Westerns would enjoy it. I know I did!
