Amazon.co.uk Review

This album is the first of two lovingly produced anthologies of original soundtrack themes from Hammer Films, this volume spanning The Curse Of Frankenstein (1957), to The Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires (1974). Ten of the selections are by Hammer's chief composer, James Bernard. His unforgettably bold "Dra-cu-la" theme appears in various guises, while his music from She is surprisingly tender. Franz Reizenstein's choral The Mummy is wondrously evocative, against which Mario Nascimbene offers a pair of spaghetti-flavoured themes for Hammer's dinosaur adventures. David Whitaker's waltz from Dr Jekyll And Sister Hyde shows Hammer diverging from the expected "horror music". Tristram Cary provides a strikingly atonal introduction to Quatermass And The Pit, Harry Robinson paints an authentically central European portrait of Countess Dracula, and Christopher Gunning is characteristically lyrical even when portraying The Hands Of The Ripper. Inevitably the sound quality varies, but all the tracks are so utterly redolent of their particular period in film history that any technical deficiencies are happily overlooked. This is a marvellous collection, the superbly detailed booklet notes providing fascinating background information, making this an outstanding chronicle of the sheer talent and invention involved in The House of Horror. --Gary S. Dalkin

This is a marvellous collection of film music featuring the main themes from 25 Hammer movies.

All of the music on this CD is quite brilliant in its own right and covers a variety of musical moods and timbres ranging from the wonderfully-cheesey 1960s' pop of "Moon Zero Two" to James Bernard's dramatic and menacing themes from films such as "Dracula", "The Curse Of Frankenstein" and "The Devil Rides Out".

My favourite tracks are Harry Robinson's rousing, western movie-style theme from "Twins Of Evil", Laurie Johnson's gallant, galloping theme from "Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter", Christopher Gunning's lovely theme from "Hands Of The Ripper", David Whitaker's bright, waltzing theme from "Dr. Jekyll And Sister Hyde" and James Bernard's sad but beautiful theme from "Taste The Blood Of Dracula".

There is an information booklet, beautifully illustrated with still photographs from Hammer films, and two horror film icons adorn the front cover - Ingrid Pitt as Carmilla Karnstein and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula.

This CD is a must-have item for Hammer enthusiasts and for fans of great film music.

splendid CD of Hammer's output, notably the best and 100% original re-mastered 'Dracula' opening theme from (1958). I say this because it has been re-recorded in many forms, this however has the bitingly crisp percussion and booming strings 'announcing' the DRA-CU-LA three stage title.
Likewise all the others are again superbly re-mastered from the original soundtracks. Bravo!

At Last, They are here in all their glory (or should I say gory!) the original themes from all the Hammer Movies from the 1950's onward. This compilation is the one we ghoul lovers have been waiting for. Enter the world of Vampires, Werewolves, Mummys, Frankensteins Monster and other creatures too numerous to mention. Compiled from the original tracks from the scores of Harry Robinson, Mario Nascimbene, David Whitaker and of course the great James Bernard, the man who started it all. Twenty five tracks from the world of Hammer Horror. There is a wide range of compositions for you to choose your favourite, my own favourites being 'Dracula' and 'She' to name but two. The best part of this compilation is they have been recorded just as they were meant to be heard, from the original movies. Harry Robinson's rousing theme from 'Twins Of Evil' is a great welcome to this album, as I remembered the witch hunters led by Gustav Veil (!) played by Peter Cushing on the prowl for witch practising women, or just anybody who came across their path. This track gives an almost here come the calvary feel to it.
Its been too long of a wait to eventually receive this music and I can't praise it enough... Great Hammer Memories !
