Praise for L.E. Modesitt, Jr.

LE Modesitt seems to be known for his fantasy, whilst in this humble reader's opinion his sci-fi is by far the better writing and an excellent read. I highly recommend dipping into any of his sci-fi work and then buying every one you can get your hands on! Involving plots, moral dilemmas, believable universes and characters - this is how sci-fi should be, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great just for fun read 28 Dec. 2013

After reading some current self published junk on Amazon, I went back to real quality books from conventional publishing world and a tested quality talent. The story line, the characters, the structure, all of it, is vastly superior and much more satisfying read. This was fairly standard work for Modesitt, but still far better than anything on Amazon of the self published carp, suck you in serials, or other so called sci-fi of the current ilk. I belief that readers should read the stuff from the greats of the genre from past decades and would stop wasting money on this carp that is being pushed at them. Stories like this one takes archetype characters, places them in interesting situations, moral conflicts, and exciting action. This story has an ambitious premise of defining humanity within near unlimited God like power, it is a simple love story told over hundreds of years. It escapes the comic superior hero with a much more complex, conflicted hero who does not want what he is. It fun fantasy of power, war with the God's of many legends, and love everlasting. The characters are interesting and you really end up caring about them. If you end liking this, and haven't read the greats, then you will really like what lies ahead. Clark, Asimov, Herbert, and the rest transcend this stuff being pushed at us for a buck because it is so easy to do. Easy is really good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Modesitt fans take heed 2 Oct. 2013

I have read everything he has written. This is the weakest of any of his books since his very early writing - I think its the weakest he has ever written, but you may feel different. In most of his writing you care about the character(s). Pretty rapidly I just wanted it to be over - and it took me several weeks to read, rather than days. You might like it - I found it tedious at best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best of the Best 27 April 2011
By J. Walker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase
I consider F&SF to be the best genre (Fantasy and Science Fiction are really two sides of the same coin) because of the openness of the possibilities in creation of the milieu, and the fact that the author can say bold things about philosophy, politics, arts, science, psychology, or any other area of human exploration, while providing escapist entertainment, i.e. without necessarily descending into pedantry or argument.
I consider Modesitt to be the best F&SF author because he tends to maintain a great balance of an easy read, escapism (the protagonist is usually powerful in ways we normal human beings aren't), and speculation/exposition. His worlds, characters, nations and so-on may not be the most realistic, but they say interesting things, and they do exciting and/or satisfying things (his characters often build, or have things built, as well as destroying, and they also develop, as in coming-of-age).
I consider this book to be his best because it is both highly accessible and multi-leveled. As artwork, it may be more impressionist than some of his other works, so that different aspects of it must be enjoyed at different distances, but if you take the time, you will be rewarded over and over by this book. The first scene stands out as one of the best of all time, both for what it reveals and what it conceals, all in a brief span of words and action. This happens again and again throughout the book, and it is true that the pleasure only grows upon reading it a second, third, and fourth time, as the reader enjoys how Modesitt plays with perceptions, both the characters' and the readers'.

5.0 out of 5 stars read and reread countless times.... 24 Jun. 2013
By steve - Published on Amazon.com

amazing book that only gets better the more you reread it. like others have said, it has the feel of an epic series in a single stand alone book. and like many of modesitt's other series, it sort of ties in to an overall inter galactic world/struggle/plot that you only start to see after reading several of his series. 5/5 would recommend to anyone who enjoys books that make you think a little more than your average novel, or anyone who really identifies with the loner-turned-powerful character archetype
4.0 out of 5 stars loved the idea and build up 24 April 2014
By Tony - Published on Amazon.com

Loved the beginning, middle, the build up was great, but I admit the end seemed like cutting an apple with a blunt knife. Maybe I was tired, but I found the normal flow of the authors writing a bit bumpy towards the end. I understood the whole story but found I was getting a headache towards the end, I didn't think that's what the book deserved. Anyway onto another of his books.
