"This superb encyclopedia is likely the definitive work on Britain's most celebrated genre film producer. ...this book covers the entirety of the studio's filmography, not neglecting its forays into crime films and comedies. ...Although Maxford is obviously a big fan, he doesn't pull any punches about Hammer's missteps and Hammer Complete functions as a guide to film quality as well as a purely factual work. ...tons of illustrations, including rare foreign-market posters. ....A major achievement"--Booklist; "It is really hard to be not excited when a book comes out on one of your favorite studios that is just a few pages shy of a 1000! Sure, some of you that ask, do we really need another book on Hammer Films? Well if it is as massive and thorough as this one, then that would be a definite yes! I have been waiting on this book to come out since McFarland announced it well over a a year ago, but had no idea how colossal of a tome this would be. Buy this book. More recently we have had the wonderful Peveril Publications written by Wayne Kinsey giving us fans exactly what we want with unlimited rare images, film stills and photographs of props as well as information on these classic horror films crammed into each book about Hammer. Simply excellent.
Now as a companion to join these books in your collection comes the Howard Maxfords perfect reference book on Hammer Film Productions. I have seen the odd spelling error and typography error on a few of its pages. But in a book of this size and with the sheer amount of information it carries within its pages it is only the smallest of complaints.
Yes, it is a big book both in weight and price, but don't be put off. You will be well rewarded investing in this magnificent publication.
Hammer Fans rejoice for once again 'Hammer House of Horror has risen from the Grave!'
Structured in A-Z format this has small biographies on even the most minor members of the cast and crew right through to extensive coverage of the studio's major films and stars. It also contains useful information on dvd/blu ray releases, alternative versions and box office.
Illustrated throughout with many stills I hadn't seen before and an appendix of the productions that never made it to the screen, this really has everything you could want. I own several Hammer books already including a previous one by the author and was wary of spending so much on another but this really must be the last word on the studio. I'm glad I made the investment and it will take me years to make full use of it. Highly recommended.

I do have two sort, really not complaints, but bear with me. These are not the book or the author's fault. More likely McFarland's
Someone's definition of "Lavish" is very different from mine. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of very nice black and white photos and poster reproduction. But "Lavishly Illustrated?", wouldn't go that far. And as a Hammer fan, I have seen most of these before.
Also should mention that, as I've found in many McFarland book, the page listed in the Index is not always the page what you're looking for is listed on. As an example, the Index said what I was looking up was listed on Page 13. This is a book that is DENSE with text. Each page three rows of tiny lettering. I spent a good half hour reading and reading Page 13, only to find what I was looking for was on Page 14. It's just that the entry it was included in started on 13 and carried over to 14. Again, I've found this in several other McFarland books and it can get annoying.
Yea it's expensive, but it's awesome. I was more than hesitant to buy this but it's 100% worth it. If you have other Hammer Films reference books, don't throw them out. Just be prepared to add this one to the top of the stack.
