The Hama Adapter is tiny. It sits about 5mm out of the front of my PC, or it would, but there is a recess around my USB ports meaning that there is virtually no chance of me knocking it off, unlike the previous Belkin and BlueSoleil ones I tried.
I'm one seriously happy teddy.
One word of advice though, DON'T plug in the Hama USB adapter before you have installed the Toshiba BT drivers from the mini-CD or you will get the vanilla Widcomm drivers which are not as good. Oh, and don't panic if the driver installation takes a while or seems to get stuck. It takes about 3-5 minutes to install, and like I said earlier, a reboot IS required to replace the Widcomm stack.
Enjoy. I am.
The Hama website seems to offer up-to-date Win7 64-bit drivers (with instruction panes in German), but you cannot let Windows 7 load its own Bluetooth and pick out the relevant peripheral driver from the stash of HAMA material (apparently including all of the Toshiba software, not just device drivers) it puts on the C: drive, as it seems there is no .inf file in the folder structure bearing the requisite information. My e-mail asking HAMA for support - to know how to give Win7 the drivers needed for my mobile to allow push of pictures under Win7's own bluetooth software - was deleted (after some days of no response), apparently without being read.
I removed the whole Toshiba bluetooth stack (and 'stack' is the right word) and HAMA drivers, removed 'program file backup' options from Win7 backup (leaving drive image backup only), and re-installed from the mini CD, then turned off all of the numerous Toshiba bluetooth facilities which I did not need. Like others, I could have found this easier had there been any documentation for the software. With Win7 backup modified, and most of the Toshiba software turned off, there is now no appreciable loss of system performance.
In conclusion, the dongle works well enough when the Toshiba software is kept under control, but you will need to persist and to know something about IT, if HAMA aren't interested in helping you any more than they were me.Read more ›
One nice addition is a special Bluetooth handler that will use Bluetooth for audio only with Skype but not the rest of your PC audio. Useful if you like listening to music or watching video with quality headphones.
As mentioned at the start, the hardware works fine and has very good range.
It is easy to install with the CD, took me a while to make sure I got the Vista installation order right. Vista was quite unnerving in prompting to install it constantly while I installed from the CD.
in XP it is first plug-in then install, in Vista the other way round.
I like most Hama products, cheap and reliable. I have to admit the TRUST dongle has a better menu to select the different actions you want to take with the phone I connect.
Just ordered the Nokia bluetooth earphones, so fingers crossed I get them to work on my phone and computer alike.
