How to Fit and Get Started with No-Pull Training

Step 1: To select the right size headcollar for your dog, we always recommend measuring your dogs’ neck and nose circumference and then referring to our sizing guides.

Initially your dog may object to wearing the headcollar, so it is important to introduce the headcollar to your dog slowly and ensure there is a positive association with it. Show them the headcollar and if they come forward to investigate it, verbally praise them and give a food treat. Hold the headcollar at the top of the noseband in one hand and with a food treat in the other hand, lure your dog’s nose through the loop and allow them to eat the treat. Once your dog is relaxed about doing this, gently place the noseband across their nose and give another treat. Gradually extend the amount of time your dog has the noseband on their nose before releasing the treat.

Tip: Keep the hand that is holding the noseband still and only move the hand that you are luring with.

Step 2: Once accepted, you can secure the neck strap so that it is snug, but not too tight (see step 3 for further guidance). Remember to continue to treat your dog whilst wearing the headcollar. When you remove it, be offhand for the first few moments, so that all the praise comes whilst wearing the headcollar.

Repeats these steps, steadily increasing the time the headcollar is on the dog.

Step 3: Use the slider to adjust the neck strap fit, you should be able to get 1-2 fingers between the strap and your dog's neck. The noseband should sit halfway down the nose, away from the eyes, and without pressure on the dog’s chin allowing them to open their mouth fully.

Step 4: Attach the headcollar safety link to your dog's collar.

Step 5: We always recommend using a Halti double clip Training Lead for the best no-pull training experience. Attach the small clip on your lead to the ring under your dog’s jaw and attach the larger clip on your lead to your dog’s collar or harness.

Step 6: Take your dog to a quiet place and whilst holding the lead with both hands practice walking around using the headcollar. You should only engage the headcollar by gently pulling on the lead connected to the ring under their chin when your dog is actually pulling. Its unique patented design works by gently steering the dog’s head in the direction the owner wants to go in because by pointing the head in the desired direction the body has to follow. Continue to reward your dog when they are walking without pulling.

In the early stages of no-pull training, you may notice your dog trying to remove the headcollar if they are not fully acclimatised to wearing it. Be sure to distract your dog from doing this with treats or their favourite toy. This will reinforce the positive association and experience with using a headcollar.

I have a Labrador who pulls everywhere despite absolutely tonnes of "heel" training.
This, with a 2-clip lead, gives me so much better control over where he goes, as his nose can't get too far away from me without turning him off to the side.
He still tries to pull, I didn't expect that to change.
This head collar helps me to not have a worn out hand.
He can still pick up a ball, drink water, eat treats, bark etc as this is not a muzzle and will open and flex with his jaw.
I have had a few wary questions about him as people thought he was aggressive as they thought it was a muzzle- a quick explanation that it's just a type of collar to help with pulling resolves that though.
It can be machine washed and dries fairly quickly.
I've used it for a couple of years now and it's held up, nice and durable.

Where to begin. I have a male German Shepherd, by the size chart it should have fit but seemed loose around muzzle. That’s not a huge deal. Next thing I noticed is that the part that attaches the Halti to the dog’s collar with a clip, it’s designed with just a loop on the end that goes on the Halti. This loop slides off when you open the Halti clasp so it’s VERY easy to slip off and get lost. I managed to not lose it by being careful with it so okay. Next problem was that the adjustment to make it fit snug around his head doesn’t stay tight! So by the end of the walk the Halti is loose fitting, it has to be adjusted for every walk and even mid walk to keep it tight. The way it attached to the collar was also not taught at all. It didn’t seem to do anything at all except annoy the dog. Dogs take time to get used to head collars, they find them irritating. Meaning they will try to get out of it with their paws and teeth. My dog isn’t a big jawed extreme chewing breed who destroys things. He’s very non-destructive. But with only a few uses the Halti already had chew punctures. And then I noticed that the plastic clasp was cracked. Plastic does not look firm and strong when it can be assumed many dogs will chew on it. I wish I had sent it back in time, I just missed the return window. Now I have to spend more on another brand because I bought this cheap Halti.

Back then, we had a 100 lbs Labrador mix who was crossed with all kinds of ornery, and even after obedience classes and all kinds of training, he would pull so hard he'd regularly yank me down to the ground, break free from my grip, and take off for adventures around our neighborhood (namely running to the nearby cow pasture to roll in cow patties. Which really stunk. Washing cow poo out of dog fur outside on a cold autumn afternoon is not fun, would not recommend).

I'm not exaggerating at all when I say the halti collar saved my dog from being dropped off at the shelter, because my parents were just about fed up with the stubborn boy. But then our vet recommended trying the halti collar. And man, was it a game changer!

All of a sudden, we could easily walk him! There was no more tugging, pulling, or knocking us to the ground. We could actually get him to heel. And, with positive reinforcement, he grew to love it, even running up to us to put his muzzle inside the halti because he knew it meant we were going out on another delightful walk!

And here I am now, over 20 years later, finally ordering my second halti collar as my last one sadly bit the dust, and it's just as good as all those years ago! My Caucasian Shepherd/Pyrenees cross is doing great with it, and I'm so grateful to be able to be able to experience the wonderful joy of using a halti with a large dog all over again! I love how they've improved the design, with extra padding in the halter around the nose area, as well as the fabulous added safety strap to help prevent the halter from slipping off the muzzle! It also has added reflective material which my old one did not have. And, after just a couple of positive training sessions, I'm already noticing a difference in his tugging, and I'm controlling him with a lot more ease.

If you have a big dog or a hard to manage dog to walk, I absolutely encourage you to get the halti! It has been a favorite dog walking collar of mine for over 2 decades, and I plan on continuing to use it in the years to come. Definitely recommend!
