About the Author

One of the most respected writers in the field of speculative fiction, Lois McMaster Bujold burst onto the scene in 1986 with Shards of Honor, the first of her tremendously popular Vorkosigan Saga novels. Not as good as the previous books

Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff must deliver Lady Ijada to the royal court, there to be tried and executed. But this is the land of the Five Gods, magic is everywhere and things aren't what they seem.

I've read the previous two books - the author has a talent for description and storytelling and I enjoyed them very much. I did like this, mostly. Ingrey and Ijada are interesting characters, particularly Ingrey, as he's complex. I loved some of the supporting characters more: Learned Hallana and Jokol, and his bear, were wonderful.

The whole world with the Five Gods is fascinating, and I enjoy reading about it, but in this book - maybe I'm not clever enough to understand it all - I got completely lost with the long and intricate story of the hallow king, the Holytree, the warriors, their relationship with the land, their history, their animals and the magic. It was too much and went on too long for me. The first part of the book is great, though.

I really enjoyed the "Curse of Chalion" and "Paladin of Souls" and frequently reread them and was looking forward to this. Unfortunately I was disappointed. This is crammed with so much action and so many characters that I felt it would have been more enjoyable and comprehensible if it was spread out over two books. It also bears only a tenuous relationship to the Chalion I knew and loved and I didn't find the characters engaging. I was disappointed, and this is not a book I can recommend.

This is the third book in the Chalion series but it might as well be a stand-alone because there is actually very little to link it to either of the other books, beyond mention of a name. I loved book one in the series, book two took some getting into, but did eventually grab my interest. This one I struggled to get through. The characters were less engaging than the previous books, and somehow I never really cared about what happened to any of them, especially the two leads. (The pregnant sorceress was much more interesting!) The writing is good as always. I simply didn't manage to get lost in the story.

too many rules for magic uses, shape shifting and spirit animals...like a badly organized legal code...once you get to the actual story, it is fun and exciting, but it stops and starts too abruptly...the pacing, the rhythm, is off kilter, off balance...rather a slender plot as well, and too predictable...the ending is inevitable, and the romance rather simple...oh well, it whiled away a few hours... and the setting is good, and some characters luminous, funny and sweet...so ok, three stars for effort...

If I had not read the previous books in this world I don't know if I would have liked it - it's disturbing (and more so if you don't understand the fictional world's theology), but also thoughtful and very interesting. I found every character brilliantly drawn and I couldn't put it down. I do think that readers will either love it or hate it. Only recommended if you have read an enjoyed the earlier Chalion books.

I had loved both the Curse of Chalion, and Paladin of Souls and was looking forward to this book, especially as Paladin of Souls was finished in such a way as to leave room for a sequel. Saying that I spent the first 30% of the book confused and disappointed that none of the major or minor characters from the first two books appeared at all. The geography also seem different. I was even more confused by the apparent shifts in both the religious and socio-political aspects from the earlier books.
Did I like the book? Yes eventually.
Was the book well written? Yes.
Could you read the book without reading other books in the series? Yes, probably with less confusion.
I did some investigating elsewhere and found this book is meant to be based roughly 250 years before the events of the first two books in the series. A simple one line introduction in the book could have prevented my initial confusion.

I didn't care for Bujold's forays into fantasy, but I keep coming back...
As I have said before, this is a bowdlerised Game of Thrones. And why not? Bujold's usual tight and twisty plotting, nice believable characters you get to like, well thought-out surroundings, and a satisfying end. Yeah, all the heroes survive (but only just) and find love. Personally I prefer it that way. I think I'm hooked.

Le personnage masculin principal est curieusement peu consistant, Lois McMaster Bujold nous ayant habituées à des héros denses et plein d'épaisseur.
Et son personnage féminin, d'abord alléchant, est vite relégué aux oubliettes, dont il ne sortira que pour faire valoir un peu mieux le héro.
Trois étoiles tout de même puisque l'auteure continue d'écrire, dans un style de haut vol, un récit intrigant, dont on veut connaitre le dénouement.
