We've always loved Last of the Summer Wine but have run out of shows to watch as the BBC seems to be taking their time to release new seasons. We love Thora Hird in Summer Wine so gave this a try and liked it just as much. Shame there wasn't more than two seasons but certainly well worth the purchase price.

This is such a funny series. It was written by the same writer as In Loving Memory Dick Sharples so carries on with the same style of writing but this time Thora is a hell and brimstone Salvation Army Captain. Patsy Rowlands is both her neice and her 2nd and they are sent in both series to small northern towns to clean them up. Set in the north it has the northern sense of humour throughout and Series 1 is hysterically funny with Rosalind Greenwood as well playing a new Sally Ann recruit. Series 2 (and you get both) has a new cast support, Patsy is in both however its very good but Series 1 is unsurpassed. Hallelujah lifts your heart, makes you laugh out loud and still makes you think, and in my case even wonder. Thora and Patsy are just so believable. The stories are typical situations that the Sally Ann may come across (but with humour of course) and it just lends to a series that would be very hard to follow now. Its old and its golden and it should not offend anyone unless they chose to be offended because of the subject matter in which case now you know what its about, don't buy it and leave it for those of us who are not PC fanatics and still have an appreciation for good old fashioned british humour.

I purchased the first series of this wonderful sitcom starring Dame Thora Hird two years ago, I am now wondering why it has taken me so long to buy the second series.

In my opinion, the second series of 'Hallelujah!' was even better than the first. These seven episodes were first broadcast on ITV in 1984 and are truly laugh out loud gems. It's a shame that they aren't better known, it's wonderful British comedy.

Captain Emily Ridley (Third) is back and this time she has been sent to the quiet Yorkshire town of Blackwick. The fun of the first series was that this barmy Salvation Army woman was sent to a place where there was no trouble at all (despite her attempts to find it) but now, there are plenty of dodgy characters for her to sort out, she is determined that these 'sinners' will be saved.

I think it a real shame that this funny family show only ran for two series because on the strength of these episodes, I would loved to have seen more.

Thora Hird is hilarious in this, I still regard it as one of her best roles. This much missed performer had real comic timing and was one of our finest character actresses. Luckily, her vast TV and film work still lives on and continues to entertain.

I have discovered that Thora Hird is always at her best, and this Salvationist spoof is no exception! She will keep you in stitches with a comic surprise at every turn. Don't pass this one up!

A great television series about the inner workings and politics of the Salvation Army set in Yorkshire, England in the early 1980s. 2 series of the show were produced. Dame Thora Hird co-stars with Patsy Rowlands (who played the character, Betty, in 'Bless this House'). The Christmas special from series 2, adapted from the Charles Dickens' short story 'A Christmas Carol' is quite entertaining. I recommend this complete series as quality television viewing.
