I also thought that the war scenes were different from others that I've seen before in that it looks simply terrifying and confusing. I wondered how soldiers in conditions such as these don't become so overwhelmed and reactive that they don't end up shooting any movement close by. It is hard to imagine anyone who has experienced such conditions suffering lifetime trauma.
A very minor gripe, but I think the story was deserving of assuming we 'got the message'. We see soldiers after battle both when the conscription we are following are about to go forward for the first time and they are joined by the previous unit. At this time, the men are blackened and traumatised, yet when we see men from the unit who have managed to return without the help of Doss they are, without exception, standing with unblemished faces. The only reason I am mentioning such a relatively trivial point is that I felt this one scene distracted from a film that was otherwise an excellent achievement.
Oh - and I loved the understated scripting and performance of Doss. Well done!!!!!!
Now the film itself. Its the very best new release I have seen for years, based on a true story about a contentious objector who enlists as a medic but refuses to handle a rifle and is bullied by his section. Only to end up a hero by saving the lives of over seventy of his men in action. I have watched this film a good few times now and always glued to it from start to finish. It still brings tears to my eyes.
The director, Mel Gibson has produced a war story that needed to be told in such a heart warming graphic way, the family issues, the love interest, the fight to be accepted and not branded a coward, and that's before leaving US soil.
Once the battle scenes commence you are there, the atmosphere watching this movie is intense, the reality of war hits you, and amongst all the blood, death, severed limbs, we see hope, valour and the meaninglessness of why we choose to dominate and destroy each other.....Mel Gibson is a mighty director, the story told is a powerful message.....within darkness and death, life can shine.
Buy, watch, enjoy, it's a film that deserves it's place amongst the finest of war movies.

What he went through in that action was bad enough, but it was then followed by decades of subsequent health issues resulting from that. To cap it all his first wife pre-deceased him by 15 years in 1991 after a car accident (he remarried). He died 23 March 2006 age 87 RIP Desmond.
A blunt, brutal film - not for the fainthearted, Mel Gibson did not pull his punches - but a fitting testament to an amazing man.
