- after this, setup was very easy and completed within an hour
- if your computer doesnt have a CD drive, you can download drivers from the huion website
- on mac: remember to adjust the screensetting in the TabletDriverPanel app to monitor2, or the cursor will pop up on your primary monitor. i had some trouble with this as the manual doesn't tell you
- for the first week of ownership i had to recalibrate the tablet whenever i turned it off instead of setting it on sleep mode. this problem has- strangely enough- gone away completely. recalibration is fast, but it was a minor annoyance.
-the tablet comes with a cable with an outlet type F (mainland europe-type outlet) and another cable with an outlet type G (UK). this is very handy and its great to not have to buy a converter.
-the tablet pen is very light. i weighed it, its around 14 grams (same weight as two standard school pencils, if you want to test). i personally love this for very light strokes, but ymmv- however i imagine it possible to attach weight yourself if needed
-the tablet pen battery lasts a very long time, for days on end. while there is no light or indicator for battery percentage on the pen, i have never had an issue.
-do not take the screen protector it comes with off- it is meant to be drawn on and is a much better surface than the glass underneath. the screen protector is fastened with 4 bits of double sided tape, but it's securely fastened and i have not have any issue with it yet. i've also been able to vacuum it gently without it falling off
-because of the wires coming out from the low back of the tablet, it cannot lie down in its lowest (flattest) setting without wobbling. i imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to stabilise it with some supporting objects underneath but i wanted to mention it.
- no dead pixels so far.
overall i'm very happy, it's a very good tablet for its price category. i recommend it
The packaging is very secure, the item comes wrapped in protective covering and cushioned in foam. All other items are contained in a small cardboard box inside the main package. Set up is about as easy as it can get. You simply plug the thing in and install the small driver and control software package.
There are a number of ways to connect this to a laptop or PC, and most of these cables are supplied with the item. Connections under the unit are DVI, VGA and HDMI. As my HDMI port is already used by a second monitor and I did not want to lost capability by connecting to the vga output, I chose to use a HDMI to micro HDMI to connect this to my laptop. This cable is not supplied, and was a separate purchase. If you want to work in high resolution I would suggest either the DVI or HDMI connection as VGA has several limitations.
When turned on the tablet/monitor is quite bright, something you may want to adjust before using it long term as the brightness will cause eye strain unless you are in a well lit room. Buttons to control the tablet are based on the bottom right of the screen and are extremely easy to use and access. One caveat here, if you decide to use this item as a monitor and have it perched upright on the base, the buttons can be difficult to access as the gap between the base of the monitor and table/desk top is about 1cm. give or take a couple millimeters. The menu is operated by selecting primary function with the auto button, and navigation/adjustment with the +/- buttons. The menu is quite comprehensive and you should be able to adjust the monitor to how you want it to operate, including adding colour profiles if necessary.
The base for this item is adjustable, once mounted on the back of the monitor via four supplied screws you can adjust the height through a pull bar that releases the catch holding the frame. This will adjust to virtually flat up to vertical. However, the flat position feels unstable to me, and the monitor has a small degree of movement on the base that makes it rather unstable. Most 'angles' are fine though and the monitor is quite stable and easy to use. I've found that between 30 and 40 degrees is most comfortable for me.
The other small issue that I think is worth noting is that the cables connect to the base of the monitor, this means that they project down towards the work surface. I think it would have been better if they had use a vertical connection panel so the cables extended sideways from the monitor, but that's a minor issue. Do be aware of it though, as the cables can become entangled in the adjustable frame. Plus they need to be bent to the sides if you use this vertically as a monitor. That may cause some wear on the cables over long term use, especially if you regularly adjust the position.
Only one of the two pens supplied with this item worked for me, at the time of writing I'm trying to get the pen exchanged. (will edit if possible later.)
The digitising pen feels comfortable in the hand and is quite light compared to some other items I've used in the past. It is also rechargable, which means you don't have the extra weight of a triple A battery in the shaft. Charging is fairly quick - empty to full in about an hour. There is a small LED on the pen shaft that turns orange/red when charge is low. It is bright white when fully charged. This LED does not light up when in use - which is a good thing in my opinion. The pen is quite accurate as far as I can tell and allows for extremely fine use.
I've used this with a few different applications and it works just fine after a bit of fiddling.
For instance in Windows 10, if you wish to use photoshop, you will need to make two small adjustments. First is to turn off "use Windows Ink" in the pen options on the driver control screen, and you will need to add a text file titled PSUserConfig to your username/appdata/roaming/adobe/photoshop folder. All that needs to be in here is UseSystemStylus 0
If you don't, thanks to an update from Adobe, photoshop will be unusable as rather than drawing on the page, the cursor will grab the page and move it around the screen. Which can be momentarily disconcerting and annoying. Easy fix though, so not something to worry about.
It appears to work fine in other applications like GIMP, PaintShop Corel Paint, Manga Studio etc.
The pressure sensitive nature of this item does take a bit of getting used to. It does work, but it can be difficult maintaining a constant pressure if you are working on large areas. I would suggest in the main that you use the functions built into software to control width and weight when drawing/painting or you might end up having to repeat tasks to get it right. Perhaps over longer term using this it may become easier, but I've only had this a few days and am still on the learning curve. This is a very different experience to using one of the more standard graphics tablets, where you sketch on the tablet and watch the monitor, hoping you can get an accurate representation. This unit allows you work directly, much as though you were using a pen or brush.
There is a certain amount of separation between the work sheet and pen tip, only a couple milimeters, and you quickly overcome this disparity when using the tablet. Initially though it does feel strange, as you are not actually 'touching' the work sheet.
One more thing to note is that this is a heavy item. It is as heavy as a normal 21 inch monitor, and this must be considered when moving/carrying or placing it on surfaces.
I would recommend using the glove supplied with this item as it will help to keep grease from your hand off the screen. Partly because it saves you having to clean the screen regularly, and partly because it helps when using the monitor, you are less likely to slip or snatch with the glove on. This is not a large glove, it does stretch and will fit most small to medium hands. People with large hands may find it a bit too tight, but you can buy alternatives if necessary.
One final thing to note, the monitor comes with a protective plastic sheet taped to the glass screen underneath. Unless you are used to working directly onto glass, I would suggest leaving it on the screen to start with. Mostly because it is textured and gives a very tactile feedback when using the pen. I believe that you can buy screen protectors for this separately, but why not use what is supplied to start with. The textured nature of the cover gives this a better feel when painting or sketching and feels more like a heavy weight paper, than the smooth surface of the glass.
I've seen past complaints about this item having a ridge issue around the edge of the monitor screen allowing dust particles to insinuate themselves around the black border. In the time I've had this item I have not noticed this at all. This may be because Huion have addressed the issue and changed the design to make the edges tighter, I don't know. But so far I have no serious complaints or issues with this unit. It is working beautifully, and has been since I set it up. How well this works in a professional environment for photo editing I can't say, I am not a professional artist or editor, but for my own uses it is absolutely perfect and I expect to get a great deal of use out of this.
Oh, as a side note, it works just fine as a second or third monitor if you should need to employ it for that purpose.
The display came well protected, big points for Huion for that. The display is very responsive, and it did not require any colour calibration. The stand is very stable and easy to use. When not used for art, it works well as a secondary monitor, though it doesn't work well for gaming or fast paced videos, as a bit of ghosting occurs when objects move across the screen. Of course, this display is meant for art, so I do not give negative points for that. You can even assign a key combination for the two buttons on the pen!
The display has a rubber stand(?) underneath the bottom which allows access to the buttons, which was an issue with the previous model. The screen did not have any trapped dust underneath the glass, nor have I experienced any dead pixels. I had no issue with driver installation, either. I didn't experience any wobble when drawing and I had no compatibility issues with Photoshop CS5 or PaintTool SAI.
As wonderful as this product is, there are a few cons I've encountered:
The pen makes a clicking sound, and sometimes it sometimes screeches when drawing. I usually don't even notice this because I always have music in the background when drawing.
It took me several tries to get the pen calibration right, and its still not 100% accurate. I've gotten used to this and am not really bothered by it, but I wish the accuracy was better. I've heard this is an issue for all the drawing displays on the market, though.
