About the author

Jon Duckett has been helping companies create innovative digital solutions for over 15 years, designing and delivering web and mobile projects for small businesses and tech startups through to global brands like Diesel, Philips, Nike, Wrangler, and Xerox.
During this time, he has has written and co-authored over a dozen books on web design and programming.
Jon has not only written his his latest books HTML & CSS (design and build websites) and JavaScript & jQuery (interactive front end web development), but also designed the entire book from scratch. Dispensing with the traditional template of programming books, he wanted to present the information in a manner that is less intimidating and more relevant to those who have never tried to write code before. The result is a new, exciting way to learn about HTML, CSS and JavaScript presented in full-color, with plenty of info-graphics and photography that really make the title stand out from other books that cover the same topics.

It’s a great book this with simple layouts and information is presented in a way that is easily digestible, easily understandable and works through at a pace that is not overwhelming. Before you know it you’ll have pages up and running and shifting things around on the screen.
A great book that is a fabulous learning tools both informationally and visually and is now a book that my son is using to help him with his IT school lessons on web design.
I do have one criticism to make, and it relates to the extremely small sized font used in quite a lot of the screen shot examples. The text in these screen shots is often extremely small and often very difficult to read! (There is a good example of the minute text on Page 34.) Like many senior people, I suffer from a degree of long sight, and I find it almost impossible to clearly read some of the smaller text. Looking at the general page layout of this book I find it puzzling why the screen shot examples could not have been made much larger, because acres of page space is simply wasted on many, nearly empty, pages.
I have successfully done this based on what I learned from this book.
My view is the learning style described as follows is effective:
The author explains the topics in the chapter.
At the end of each chapter there is an excerise where you can type in code relevant to the chapter and see a website type output.
I did these exercises and then made changes to the code so that I could learn to change things.
This worked for me and I have been able to customise one of the websites by changing and editing code.
As per the content it covers a lot of the things you are going to use on an everyday basis if you decide to make a career out of this and even more useful stuff.
If you are new to web development I would encourage you to purchase this book alongside the Javascript & jQuery book by the same author. Amazing combo and really useful!

I cannot overstate how well written this book is. It is clear, concise, easy to understand and every piece of code it introduces is fully explained and examples given. It seems improbable that such a book wouldn't be boring, but honestly, it's not.
I am now about to go and buy the javascript version so I can get started on that one.
Highly, highly recommended.
My only one minor niggle is that it is time for an update- it's now 4 years old.
