When it came to finally moving on from WinMo (due to dwindling software support) the HTC One seemed the natural choice after a couple of year on an HTC HD2.
The choice, for me, was between a Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. The two leading flagship smart phones at that time (I won't even entertain the idea of an iPhone, I'm sorry - at every inspection they have turned out to be more style over substance - good, but not as good as the competition).
The HTC One was my choice simply because the S4 felt a bit plasticky. There was also the fact that I have liked every iteration of the HTC Sense interface on WinMo and the Samsung interface just felt a bit 'odd'. (That's obviously a personal thing and I know some people prefer the Samsung approach to HTC Sense).
When the One arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The phone feels great. Solid, weighty enough, metal back, superb screen, AMAZING speakers... there is not one thing about the build that is wrong.
Android (which I had run occasionally as a dual boot on my HD2) was extremely slick and fast. My email, contacts and calendars imported seamlessly (via Google), and there was an equivalent, if not better, app for everything I had on WinMo.
The only one problem I had was an occasional 'clicking' during phone calls. Amazon swapped the phone with an advance replacement. This mean I could try out the HTC transfer app and copied everything - including settings - from the old to the new handset. It worked like a charm - quick and easy.
I can honestly say that this is by far the best phone I have had. I've been a smart phone addict since long before the iPhone debuted. I've upgraded every year bar one since 2007 and I've always opted for HTC after carefully studying the other options. They have produced a couple of dodgy models, but I disregarded those in the same way I disregarded other brands when they didn't met my requirements - I wouldn;t choose an HTC just because it was HTC, it has to be right.
Right now I'm using the phone for all the usual smart phone things - phone, address book, calendar, messaging, browsing, Social Media, watching videos during my commute, SatNav...etc etc etc. I am also doing web development on this phone during my commute - the screen may be a bit on the smell side but it's still easily doable.
Add the IR blaster hidden in the power button, the USB On-The-Go support, the latest versions of Android and Sense (well done to HTC for keeping this model updated swiftly) and this is quite simply the best phone I've had the pleasure of owning and using.
### Re Andoid 'L' version ###
"Android L update for HTC phones
HTC will begin rolling out Android L updates to the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) within 90 days of receiving final software from Google, followed shortly by other select HTC devices. The Android L update timeline will begin once we receive the final software from Google and device updates will vary based on device, region, and carrier."(From the HTC website on 26/6/2014)
Initially I liked the design and build quality of the phone but after using it for a couple of days I found a number of issues with it.
Firstly it got extremely warm after a short period of use, much warmer than any other phone I have used, the battery life was shockingly bad (from fully charged down to 21% over night when I wasn't using the phone).
There was also a camera fault of a green tinge down the right hand side of any photos taken.
The power button was completely flush with the phone making it difficult to use (having looked at other HTC Ones in local stores I see the button issue varies on each unit meaning some are better than others)
So overall I was very disappointed with the phone especially as reviews seem to say its currently the best android phone available.
I have now switched to a Samsung Galaxy S4 which even though the ultimate build and finish isn't up to the HTC One I am more than happy with its performance (especially battery life of 24 hours+)
However, my enthusiasm was quickly dampened by the fact that my sim card would not fit.
On looking, it requires a microsim (basically a smaller version of a normal sim card). It appears that the whole HTC One Range (With the exception of the One V, which I had as my previous phone) requires this type of sim.
Nowhere on the amazon page for this phone was this mentioned at all (If it was, please do point me to it).
I've now ordered one from o2, but have now got to wait for it to arrive before I can actually use the phone.
I am aware I could cut my existing sim card down, but rather not risk doing that.
The four stars is not for the phone itself (that gets a full five stars), but more due to the description on here omitting that crucial information.
